STAMP DESCRIPTION & HISTORY: The 2009 King & Queen of Hearts stamps were issued together as part of the USPS Love series and feature coordinating interpretations of two of the most recognizable figures in a deck of playing cards. Artist Jeanne Greco created the King and Queen digitally using imagery from 18th-century French playing cards as a reference, while Derry Noyes served as designer, art director, and typographer. Issued on May 8, 2009, in Washington, D.C., each stamp carried the contemporary 44-cent First-Class Mail rate. Avery Dennison printed the stamps using gravure, and the two designs were distributed together in self-adhesive convertible booklets of 20. Sold here as a coordinated set of two—one King and one Queen—the pair creates an especially natural visual metaphor for couples, partnership, and romance within the Love series.
