STAMP DESCRIPTION & HISTORY: The 1995 Cherub stamp was issued as part of the USPS Love series and features the left-hand cherub from Raphael’s celebrated Renaissance painting Sistine Madonna, shown resting his chin on his hand. USPS stamp-development manager Terry McCaffrey selected the familiar figure after encountering the cherubs reproduced on a postcard and adapted the imagery for the Love series. Issued on May 12, 1995, in Lakeville, Pennsylvania, the 32-cent denomination paid the contemporary First-Class Mail letter rate. This version was produced by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing as a booklet stamp using lithographic and engraved printing. Its combination of Renaissance art, contemplative expression, and romantic association gives the design a distinctive classical character for wedding and special-occasion mail.

STAMP MEANING & SPIRITUAL SIGNIFICANCE: The Cherub design carries themes of affection, tenderness, contemplation, innocence, beauty, and enduring love. STAMP SERIES HISTORY: The USPS Love series began in 1973 and became an established recurring series in 1987. In 1995, USPS created several related cherub stamps based on the two famous figures from Raphael’s Sistine Madonna. The 32-cent versions featured the cherub with his hand beneath his chin, while the 55-cent versions used the companion cherub with folded arms. Scott 2959 is the 32-cent booklet-format version issued on May 12, 1995. These designs continued into 1996 in additional formats, making the cherubs one of the more extensively issued motifs within the Love series.

GENUINE USPS POSTAGE: These unused vintage postage stamps are perfectly valid for use as current postage for mailing with USPS as long as you use an adequate amount of additional postage to achieve standard postage rates according to the weight of your mailing. GUMMED STAMPS: These postage stamps have a traditional moisture-activated gum on the back. These stamps require licking or wetting to adhere to envelopes or other surfaces. To ensure good adhesion, apply vintage gummed stamps to your mailings with a glue stick (we recommend using Elmer's "Re-Stick" glue sticks).
