STAMP DESCRIPTION & HISTORY: The 1988 "Love You" stamp was issued as part of the USPS "Special Occasions" series and features a bird peeking out from an open mailbox on a solid green background. Designer Harry Zelenko created the Special Occasions designs in a clean, greeting-card-inspired style, pairing simple imagery with direct messages suitable for personal correspondence. Issued on October 22, 1988, in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania, the 25-cent stamp paid the contemporary First-Class Mail letter rate. It was printed by the American Bank Note Company using photogravure and issued in booklet panes of six. Its combination of a literal mailbox, affectionate wording, and playful bird imagery makes it especially well suited to romantic mail, wedding correspondence, and notes sent simply to say “Love You.”

STAMP SERIES HISTORY: The USPS "Special Occasions" series was created to provide stamps specifically suited to personal celebrations and everyday greeting-card correspondence. An earlier 1987 booklet offered several different messages, and the 1988 issue was redesigned around four especially popular sentiments: “Happy Birthday,” “Best Wishes,” “Thinking of You,” and “Love You.” The revised booklet format allowed individual stamps to be removed more easily and grouped the four designs across two se-tenant panes. The Love You design paired a romantic message with postal imagery, making it one of the most naturally suited stamps in the issue for wedding and relationship-centered correspondence.

GUMMED STAMPS: These postage stamps have a traditional moisture-activated gum on the back. These stamps require licking or wetting to adhere to envelopes or other surfaces. To ensure good adhesion, apply vintage gummed stamps to your mailings with a glue stick (we recommend using Elmer's "Re-Stick" glue sticks).
