STAMP DESCRIPTION & HISTORY: The 1985 Love Crayon stamp was issued as part of the USPS Love series and features vibrant multicolored brush strokes paired with the word “Love” in bold purple lettering. Artist and designer Corita Kent created the contemporary graphic design using six vivid colors—yellow, orange, red, green, blue, and purple—to give the stamp a spontaneous, expressive quality. Issued on April 17, 1985, in Hollywood, California, the 22-cent stamp paid the contemporary First-Class Mail rate. It was printed by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing using photogravure and issued in panes of 50. Its energetic brushwork and modern color palette made it a distinctive departure from more traditional romantic imagery and gave the Love series a strong graphic-art identity.

It was notable for being issued after Valentine’s Day, reinforcing USPS’s message that Love stamps were intended year-round for weddings, birthdays, anniversaries, and other meaningful correspondence. Corita Kent’s vivid brush-stroke design helped broaden the visual language of the Love series beyond traditional hearts and flowers and demonstrated how contemporary graphic art could communicate affection in a bold, modern way.
