STAMP DESCRIPTION & HISTORY: The 1987 Love — Folk Art Heart stamp was issued as part of the USPS Love series and features a stylized heart surrounded by brightly colored flowers. Designer John Alcorn drew inspiration from Pennsylvania Dutch folk art, incorporating hearts, floral forms, pastel colors, and a quilt-like decorative quality into the composition. Issued on January 30, 1987, in San Francisco, California, the 22-cent stamp paid the contemporary First-Class Mail letter rate. It was printed by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing using photogravure and issued in panes of 100. Its combination of folk-art tradition, floral ornament, cheerful color, and an unmistakable heart motif makes it especially well suited to wedding invitations, Valentine correspondence, anniversaries, and other celebratory mail.
