Morning Reflection is an exploration of that fleeting, sacred moment when the world first begins to wake. Inspired by the quiet majesty of the Lowcountry, this piece captures the soft, ethereal light of dawn as it stretches across the marsh, transforming the landscape into a study of silver and gold. My creative process for this work centered on the concept of stillness. I wanted to translate the mirror-like quality of the water—so calm it feels like a held breath—into a visual experience. To achieve this, I utilized an alla prima technique, painting "all at once" to maintain a sense of urgency and freshness. This approach allows me to work intuitively, layering wet-on-wet paint to capture the atmospheric shifts of the morning before they disappear. For me, painting is about more than documenting a physical location; it is about capturing the emotion of a place. Rather than focusing solely on botanical accuracy, I prioritize the feeling of the humid air, the muffled sounds of the wetlands, and the profound peace of a new day. Morning Reflection is an invitation for the viewer to step into that quietude and find a moment of personal resonance within the shifting light of the marsh.
