Festive Full-Bleed Award for the best full-bleed photo card

“Covered in Joy” by Phrosné Ras

We love how Phrosné creates a pattern out of the letterforms in her aptly-named “Covered in Joy”. So modern and editorial without sacrificing holiday spirit, this card is such a wonderful new take on full-bleed! The use of a script front for “love” adds just the right personal touch.

Minimalist Award for the best design that is simple, edited, and clean, with greater emphasis on photos and less on design elements that can detract from photos

“Joy Burst” by Betty Hatchett

Elizabeth nailed beautifully simple with “Joy Burst”! The intricate medallion recalls snowflakes and conveys the winter spirit while letting the customer’s photo really shine. The rounded corners die-cut shape is the perfect choice for this design, echoing the shape of the medallion and subtly adding to the softness of the watercolored illustration.

“Etched Greetings” by Misa

Misa’s casual holiday collage is such a fun way to feature multiple family photos on a card! The rough edges of the photos perfectly match the chalk-texture type and the lovely rustic foliage illustration. “Etched Greetings” is so beautifully balanced while still maintaining a casual feel.

Holiday Photo Card Challenge: Surprising Our Winner!

Our annual holiday photo card challenge is always the biggest challenge of the year and holds a very special place in our hearts. So every year, we try to come up with a fun way to surprise the 1st place winner.

In 2012, we surprised Angela Marzuki by asking her to hop on a Skype call with us to discuss using Dropbox (video here). In 2013, we planned a would-be-routine Minted Meetup in Jill De Haan’s hometown, with our Founder & CEO Mariam Naficy as the surprise guest with the big news (see it here). This year, we switched things up just a bit. Watch the video below to see the surprise for winner Jennifer Wick and read all the details below!

We asked Jen to come out to San Francisco to attend a (non-existent) Minted Board Meeting and give feedback as a member of the Minted Community.

Meanwhile, we decorated our office with tons of bunting banners, balloons, crepe paper, and sweet treats in anticipation of her arrival. We invited all the employees in our SF office to write her a congratulatory note and come join in the surprise celebration.

Holiday Photo Card Challenge: 1st Place Winner

It’s the moment we’ve all been waiting for!

We couldn’t be happier for Jen Wick and her big win! She expertly combines playful florals and original typography in this elegant holiday card. The festive winter flora harmoniously surround the delicate diamond. The mixture of serif, sans serif, and script artfully reinforces the balance of modern and traditional and the subtle dotted outline creates a beautiful illusion of hand-stitching that frames the design perfectly. “Storied Joy” is simply that. Congratulations, Jen – you’re amazing!

For this year’s winner surprise, we did something a little different from what we’ve ever done before. Check back tomorrow to read about the surprise and see Jen’s reaction to the big news!

How To: Create an Art Gallery Wall at Home

How to create an art gallery wall at home

Buying and collecting art? Majorly fun. Figuring out where to hang everything? Sometimes not so fun. If you’re like me, you’ve probably come across a ton of inspiring images of art-gallery walls on Pinterest or in shelter magazines, with walls fabulously filled to the brim with beautifully framed pieces. But attempting to create something similar at home can be a little intimidating.

To inspire you to create an art-gallery wall of your own, we dropped by the homes of two Minted employees: our founder and CEO Mariam Naficy (top) and associate creative director Annie Clark (bottom).

“I wanted a wall that reflected my family and our love for travel and art, and that was deliberately un-stuffy. I loved incorporating a mirror I found in Paris, a piece of antique fabric I found in Turkey, and my children’s art.” —Mariam

“My home is a work in progress. I love that I can easily add a new piece or pin a photo to this ever-evolving corner gallery.” —Annie

San Francisco-based stylist Rosy Strazzeri-Fridman worked with the ladies to create gallery-wall displays that perfectly suited their individual styles. Here, she shares her best advice and tips. So dig through your closets, pull out those pieces you’ve been meaning to have framed, and get hanging!

Holiday Photo Card Challenge: 2nd Place Winner

Each year Minted hosts our highly anticipated holiday photo card competition in search of the best and freshest holiday card designs. The results blew us away! Independent designers from all over the world stepped up to the challenge—we received an incredible 4,103 submissions from 481 artists. The votes have been tallied and the Top 50 winners have been chosen, see them all right here.

Jessica’s unexpected color palette and playful layout is truly a work of art. The expressiveness of the script gives the design a joyful energy, while the modern sans serif type helps to balance and ground the composition. Jessica’s designs always have such a positive, cheerful feel to them, and “Peaceful Wish” is a beautiful example. We love how the stylized holiday greenery illustrations seem to dance around the type, creating a perfectly festive frame.

Minted regularly partners with West Elm on art challenges, where independent designers around the world are invited to submit their freshest, most modern art-print designs.
