Designer to Know: Missy Austin

By Maia McDonald of Design Conundrum

I’m totally smitten with the design work of Missy Austin, maybe I’m a little biased because she’s fellow former Wisconsinite, but I think it’s more likely because her work is awesome. Now calling the Twin Cities home, and working for award winning design firm Zeus Jones, Missy’s design style is so fun and colorful. With an eye for typography and iconography her work includes those special touches that take a design to the next level, which I love.

Color Study: Coral Pink

By Maia McDonald of Design Conundrum

As a graphic designer I don’t use a lot of pink, partly because it usually is so strongly feminine that it can be a little limiting especially for a brand. But lately I’ve found myself very drawn to the perfect shade of coral pink. It’s so fresh and fun for summer and when paired with really strong graphic elements I almost forget about the colors girly characteristics. Below are a few examples of coral pink done right, not to sweet or feminine.

Getaway Dresses

playful and mod getaway dress by kate spade One of my favorite wedding traditions is definitely the getaway dress. While I’m not a huge fan of swapping dresses mid-celebration, I love the idea of donning a short shift for a couple’s big exit. Historically, the custom arose from necessity, as newlyweds would leave for a honeymoon immediately following the reception. Now, its less about tradition and more about a celebratory spirit and a stylish send-off.

Simply Styled Cutlery Bundles

Pretty floral cutlery bundles When warmer weather shows up, I find myself hosting casual dinners with one of two vibes: Polished and pretty or low-budget and laid-back. With this in mind, I’ve created two different types of cutlery bundles to style the table and complement each dinner.  I’ve avoided fussy folds or ornate presentation, and focused on easy assembly with special touches.

DIY Hair Ties

This just might be our easiest DIY ever. It’s as simple as tying a knot! We’ve been seeing these hair elastics in our favorite stores and all over the web, and can’t get enough. They’d make a great party craft for girls, a cute addition to a bridesmaid’s kit, or maybe they’re just the thing to brighten up that laundry-day-ponytail.
