Kids Stationery Challenge: Special Prize Winners

It’s time we plucked kids from the world of video games, television, and computers and instilled in them a love of the lost art of letter writing. Whether it’s a note from summer camp, a “thank you” to grandma, or formal response to a denied request for a larger allowance, it turns out kids have many uses for their own stationery. We asked the Minted community to give us their freshest ideas for notecards worthy of being passed during 7th period biology and what we saw made us wish we were kids again! This challenge was one big pile of fun and the winners below each stood out in one of our special prize categories. Congrats, everyone!

For the Guys Award: For the best design specifically for a boy aged 8-12. Winner: #handcramp” by Stacey Hill Stacey’s impossibly funny take on modern teens and preteens really hits the nail on the head. Her hashtag with alternating color text is perfect for the avid texter who may not be as verbose in correspondence. The aqua hues and distinct shades of green will no doubt appeal to the boys.

Holiday Photo Card Challenge: Special Prize Winners (Part 6)

Each year Minted hosts our highly anticipated holiday photo-card competition in search of the best holiday card designs. The results blew us away! Independent designers from all over the world stepped up to the challenge—we received an incredible 4,103 submissions from 481 artists. Thank you to everyone for participating!

Today, we’re happy to officially celebrate our last Special Prize winner—we had to keep this one under wraps as we waited for our magazine advertisements to come out for the holiday season!

Merry and Bright Award: For the card that would look best in a magazine advertisement—bold and highly visible, but extremely unusual and innovative while still conveying the holiday spirit.

Peaceful Watercolor” by Lindsay Megahed

Lindsay blew us away with her “Peaceful Watercolor” design. It strikes the perfect balance of being bold and eye-catching, but also calm and serene. We love the holiday spirit it conveys, despite an untraditional and non-holiday color palette and the modern, askew placement of the photo. We featured this design in our magazine ads this year as a foil card (foil version here). And check it out below in a lovely ad featured in Martha Stewart Weddings. Congratulations, Lindsay, beautiful work!

Day Planner, Notebook, and Address Book Challenge: Special Prize Winners

We’re big believers that it never hurts to have a notebook handy for your to-do lists, notes-to-self, and, of course, those brilliant ah-ha! moments. When we asked our Minted community of designers to show us their visions for new notebook designs, we wanted them to create something worthy of being carted around through life’s everyday moments. The results were more lovely than we could have imagined! From fanciful color palettes to refined fonts and typefaces, there’s truly something for everyone. The winners of the One For the Books! Day Planner, Notebook, and Address Book Challenge listed below each stood out in one of our special prize categories. Congratulations!

Perfect Pic Award for the best design that incorporates one photo in a minimalist or full-bleed design: “Tabbed Monogram” by Teresa Lang

Proving once and for all that simplicity is the ultimate form of sophistication, Teresa’s “Tabbed Monogram” is a gorgeous use of one large photo to showcase an elegant monogram. The distinct outline draws the eye into the photo, while the typographic colorblock adds a bold focal point.

Oh, Ovals! Art Challenge: Special Prize Winners

In the Oh, Ovals! Art Print Challenge, we asked the Minted Community of artists to create a collection of cutting-edge artwork to display in our soon-to-come oval frames. We encouraged experimentation with new media and styles, and are incredibly happy with the results—this was a fun one for us and for our artists. Congratulations to the winners who stood out in our special prize categories below!

New Artist Award for the best art print by a new Minted artist: “Ice on a Lake” by Renée Anne Bouffard-McManus

We are so excited to have Renee in our artist community. We were very impressed with her series of strong submissions to this challenge. In particular, we are drawn to her beautiful piece “Ice on the Lake.” This monochrome watercolor study proves Renee’s watercolor expertise. The delicate balance of value in this monochrome piece is complemented by the subtle texture of the fluid watercolors. This piece is especially strong when paired with Renee’s other piece “Mist Rises Over the Water.” Welcome to the Minted team, Renee!

Kids’ Art Challenge: Special Prize Winners

At Minted, we think it’s never too early to surround children with beautiful art. So for our recent Never Too Early Kids’ Art Challenge, we asked the Minted Community to create original works of art—the cleverer the customization, the better! The art prints below really stood out and were winners in our Special Prize categories, and we couldn’t be happier about them! Congratulations to our Special Prize winners!

Customization Award (for the cleverest customization element): “Cityscape Stats” by Frooted Design

Veteran Minted artist Tanya of Frooted Design has captured the Customization Award with this incredible cityscape. Tall buildings mix with a water tower and billboard to create a dynamic scene. Set against a flat grey backdrop, the objects are created with thickly drawn lines resulting in a simple and elegant execution. Important birth details are called out on the various signage, “advertising” the important points of the big event.

Holiday Party Invitations Challenge: Special Prize Winners

Holiday season is just around the corner (or in the case of Halloween, practically here!) and Minted customers will soon be planning fun and festive parties. So we asked the Minted Community to design unique invitations that would make any holiday celebration the most anticipated one of the season. We were looking for all types of innovative holiday party invites, and the Community delivered! The winners below each stood out in one of our special prize categories. Congrats, winners!

Modern Elegance Award for the best design that is traditional and elegant, but still fresh: “Fête de Noël” by R studio

A bold but sophisticated linear faux foil pattern frames the party details in “Fête de Noël.” Reneé’s artistic, slightly edgy take on elegance is perfectly festive. The classic type provides a great counterpoint to the more modern border (not surprising coming from the designer behind a Minted Master Class Tutorial on typography!).

Art Fair Challenge: Guest Judge’s Picks

We were beyond thrilled to have two of the world’s very best interior designers—who also happen to be prolific and accomplished bloggers—guest judge our recent Art Fair challenge. Paloma Contreras and Tobi Fairley are ladies to keep a very close eye on and luckily, through their respective blogs La Dolce Vita and Tobi’s Blog, it’s easy to do! I know you must be curious about which pieces caught their eye, so without further delay…

Paloma’s pick is “Lone Sunbather on Dunes” by Heather Nash. “This piece has stunning composition and vibrant colors” says Contreras. “I especially love the idea of this beautiful photograph printed on a large scale. It would be fabulous in virtually any room!”

Tobi chose Julie Song Ink‘s “Mingle.” “The first thing that caught my eye is the color—I am known for my use of color and this blue just grabbed my attention. But what really made me select this gorgeous artwork was the movement and excitement created by the swirls and splatters. It actually reminds me of the creative process I go through in my own work. It is a vibrant and electrifying work!”

Thank you, Paloma and Tobi, and big congratulations to Heather and Julie!

Art Fair Challenge: Special Prize Winners

Think: Frieze New York. Art Basel Switzerland. Paris Photo LA. artMKT San Francisco. The latest Art Fair Challenge was inspired by art fairs all over the globe and we asked the Minted Community to submit innovative, envelope-pushing works of art to continue to grow our offerings—taking risks was highly encouraged! There were no design restrictions in this challenge and we accepted all mediums reproducible on paper. What we received was so exciting and we’re thrilled to announce the Special Prize Winners who stood out in the categories below!

Photography Award (for the best photographic art print): “Threaded Line” by Erin Niehenke

At first glance, “Threaded Line” appears to be a quiet print paying homage to the domestic arts. Upon closer inspection, there are many elements at play. A line of vintage spools features a rainbow of colored thread set against a bright white background.  The line diagonally intersects the background with a lone spool knocked on its side in the foreground.  The warm tones of the wood spools contrast with the background, and the eye’s focus goes back and forth between the side lying spool and the line.

Erin Niehenke lives in a small town in Pennsylvania with her family and revels in the creative process.

Non-Photo Holiday Card Challenge: Guest Judge’s Picks

We were really excited to have two of the hippest ladies we know pick their favorite non-photo holiday card to send out this year. A big thank you to Angela Tafoya and Kate Arends for taking their time to inspire our community. If you’re not already following their work, you’d be remiss not to check out Refinery 29 – SF Edition and Wit and Delight.

Angela Tafoya, an editor at Refinery 29, chose Trimmed Tree by Pistols because “I love the geometric elements in the tree along with the colors used here. It feels very different and refreshing for the holidays.”

Kate Arends was drawn to Fa-La-La-Lettered by Up Up Creative because when she “first saw this design I wished I had thought of it! So clever. I love the modern, clean palette and how friendly and fresh the graphic feels.”

Thank you so much Angela and Kate and big, big congratulations to Melissa Egan of Pistols and Julie Green of Up Up Creative!

Corporate Holiday Card Challenge: Special Prize Winners

Our corporate customers turn to Minted for fresh, unique holiday cards that will stand out from the stack. So in the Office Wonderland Corporate Holiday Card Challenge, we asked the Minted Community to help them send goodwill and cheer in a joyful, inclusive way. The Community delivered with cards that are sure to appeal to every client, business partner, and customer! The winners below each stood out in one of our special prize categories. Congrats, winners!

Most Wonderful Corporate Card of the Year Award for the most original corporate holiday card that you won’t find on other sites: “The Office” by Lori Wemple

Lori’s clever, well-crafted corporate take on “‘Twas the Night Before Christmas” put a smile on our faces at the Minted office (we admit it, nice paper is our idea of the perfect Christmas present!). We’re so impressed by how Lori combines fonts, switches up line breaks, and curves the text while still maintaining the flow of the poem so that it’s easy to read. Great job, Lori!
