Domino & At Home With a Minted Artist: Brandy Brown-Bergquist

The latest installment of At Home With a Minted Artist, our home + studio tour collaboration with domino magazine, just went up and features the lovely Brandy Brown-Bergquist of Marabou Design. She gives domino editors a tour of her stylish Seattle home (how much do you love that chartreuse wall?!) and talks about what’s inspiring her lately, her favorite possession (it’s actually pictured below!), and her must-have splurge. Head on over to domino to read the interview and check out their archive of previously featured Minted artists, too.

Some artists I know best by their signature florals or illustrations or style of lettering, but I can generally spot a Pistols design when I see wonderfully clever copy coupled with the most perfect combination of artwork and type to bring it to life. This card is no exception! The design is simple, yet playful, and an adorable way for a family to share that they received an extra special present for the holidays this year.

Whimsical and bright, “Hap-happiest time” makes us smile from ear to ear. Jen’s simple color palette allows her always-incredible hand-drawn lettering to take center stage, and the mix of styles is unexpected and fun. We love how the stars, dashes, and dots play around the text. Who couldn’t be happy about a design like this?

“A Holiday Note” strikes the perfect balance between classic and modern. Chryssi’s confident use of white space frames the photo and puts it at center stage, while the playful handwritten-style script adds a festive twist. Crafting such a clean design is no easy task, and this holiday card proves that less can truly be more.

I am absolutely swooning over Rachel’s “Evergreen Frame”! The elegant design uses curved pine garlands to create a bountiful frame for the holiday sentiments. White type pops off of the bright red background, and the mix of font styles creates an ideal composition. Perfectly modern – but with a nod to tradition – this card is sure to make a grand statement.

The spectacular use of big, bold, and bright lettering makes this fun holiday card pop! Karidy has garnished this delightful composition with festive details. From the chalked look of each letter to the joyful red holly berries and verdant leaves, this design really does make the season jolly! With a holiday card this expertly crafted, it’s hard to believe Karidy had been a Mintie for less than a year when this challenge started. We’re so very lucky to have her!

Merry Wish” by Lori Wemple

Is there anything Lori Wemple can’t do? Lori is well established as a master of designing with vibrant colors and rich textures – she even did a Minted Master Tutorial on it! But here, she proves that with just one color (and very possibly one hand tied behind her back), she can create a truly stunning holiday card. If I didn’t know how sweet she is, I might accuse her of being a show off! The elegant lettering, intricately fitted, flows together to make a perfect Christmas tree.

Meet a Mintie: Penelope Poppy

Name: Nicole Armstrong
Location: Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
Years with Minted: 4
Expertise: Watercolor style marker with black line art
Occupation: Elias/Savion Advertising Graphic Designer and Mintie

When did you first realize you wanted to be a designer?
Since I was little, I loved to color and draw. My mom would tell you it all started when I won my first coloring contest when I was 4 years old. It was a Christmas contest, and I won a teddy bear wearing a Santa hat. After receiving the bear, I immediately cut his hat off and thought it would look better on me, though it was too small. I still have “Teddy” (I know, so original), sans hat, to this day!

Throughout my grade school and high school years,, I took every art class there was.
I wasn’t really familiar with “design,” but I knew I loved being creative. Turns out, I was pretty good at it.
