Recipe: Classic Cranberry Sauce (With Printable Gift Label!)

This holiday season, in addition to our regular Julep contributors, we’re also sharing stories from our Minted artists and designers about how they celebrate this most wonderful time of the year.

Name: Susan Brown
Where you’re based: Menomonie, WI
How long you’ve been with Minted: Since 2011
My favorite thing about the holidays is… having our son and his fiancé home for a few days.
This year, I’m thankful for… good friends, good books, and gold foil!
Thanksgiving isn’t Thanksgiving unless… my family fights over the dark meat.
Stuffing—love it or loathe it? Love it (especially mine!).

There is little that signals the approaching holidays better than the bright red cranberry bogs along Wisconsin’s highways. Since Wisconsin is the biggest producer of this versatile berry, it seemed only natural to share this simple Thanksgiving recipe for fresh cranberry sauce with you. And if you’ve never made this tasty, tart sauce before, I hope it will become a tradition in your family, too.I like to make an extra-large batch of cranberry sauce and spoon it into small canning jars to give as a parting gift. That way, when I’m passing out Thanksgiving leftovers for guests to take home, I include a jar so everyone can enjoy turkey sandwiches with cranberry sauce the next day.  —Susan

Day Planner, Notebook, and Address Book Challenge: Special Prize Winners

We’re big believers that it never hurts to have a notebook handy for your to-do lists, notes-to-self, and, of course, those brilliant ah-ha! moments. When we asked our Minted community of designers to show us their visions for new notebook designs, we wanted them to create something worthy of being carted around through life’s everyday moments. The results were more lovely than we could have imagined! From fanciful color palettes to refined fonts and typefaces, there’s truly something for everyone. The winners of the One For the Books! Day Planner, Notebook, and Address Book Challenge listed below each stood out in one of our special prize categories. Congratulations!

Perfect Pic Award for the best design that incorporates one photo in a minimalist or full-bleed design: “Tabbed Monogram” by Teresa Lang

Proving once and for all that simplicity is the ultimate form of sophistication, Teresa’s “Tabbed Monogram” is a gorgeous use of one large photo to showcase an elegant monogram. The distinct outline draws the eye into the photo, while the typographic colorblock adds a bold focal point.

Big News: Fabrics and Stores!

Today, I’m excited to announce that Minted is expanding into textiles and has opened more than 1,000 stores for competition-winning designers and artists, turning Minted into a platform-enabled marketplace and providing Minted’s customers more direct access to the world’s best designers and artists.

Over the past seven years, Minted has focused on creating beautiful one-of-a-kind paper goods – stationery, party décor and art – and starting today, you’ll be able to find the same high-quality, highly unique assortment you’ve come to expect from us in fabrics, sold by the yard.  In order to assemble the gorgeous assortment of fabrics you can now find on Minted, we quietly held a design competition and received 1,400 breathtaking submissions by independent artists around the world – from Cape Town, South Africa to Milford, Michigan.  The winning design, Sweet Leaves and Berries, was created by Erin McManness of Atlanta, Georgia.  And that’s just the beginning!

In other news, we are also announcing that more than 1,000 winning designers have been invited to open their own stores on Minted. Going forward, if you win a prize in a Minted design challenge, you will be invited to open a store on Minted where you can launch your any art prints and fabric designs you choose without going through the competition process, using Minted’s back-end fulfillment and customer service to operate your business.  You can easily upload your art print, for example, and sell large format prints, framed, directly to consumers – with Minted handling all of the printing, framing, and customer service.

As I sat here writing this blog post tonight, I saw countless art prints being launched to the site.  In fact, Erin McManness (mentioned above as our fabrics design challenge winner), coincidentally launched this quite adorable art print, “French Flower Shop” as well the beautiful “Little Terrarium Succulent Illustration” while I was writing about her!

Finally, in order to help designers and artists continue doing what they do best – create beautiful, one-of-a-kind goods – and in order to help us do what we do best – make and ship their creations on-demand  – we’re happy to also announce that Minted has raised $38 million in a Series D round led by Norwest Venture Partners, with participation by Technology Crossover Ventures.

To our customers – we thank you for your patronage and we continue to strive to serve you better each year.

To our community of designers and artists – thank you for your continued support, you make Minted special and we are honored to have you be a part of our curated marketplace.

Oh, Ovals! Art Challenge: Special Prize Winners

In the Oh, Ovals! Art Print Challenge, we asked the Minted Community of artists to create a collection of cutting-edge artwork to display in our soon-to-come oval frames. We encouraged experimentation with new media and styles, and are incredibly happy with the results—this was a fun one for us and for our artists. Congratulations to the winners who stood out in our special prize categories below!

New Artist Award for the best art print by a new Minted artist: “Ice on a Lake” by Renée Anne Bouffard-McManus

We are so excited to have Renee in our artist community. We were very impressed with her series of strong submissions to this challenge. In particular, we are drawn to her beautiful piece “Ice on the Lake.” This monochrome watercolor study proves Renee’s watercolor expertise. The delicate balance of value in this monochrome piece is complemented by the subtle texture of the fluid watercolors. This piece is especially strong when paired with Renee’s other piece “Mist Rises Over the Water.” Welcome to the Minted team, Renee!

Kids’ Art Challenge: Special Prize Winners

At Minted, we think it’s never too early to surround children with beautiful art. So for our recent Never Too Early Kids’ Art Challenge, we asked the Minted Community to create original works of art—the cleverer the customization, the better! The art prints below really stood out and were winners in our Special Prize categories, and we couldn’t be happier about them! Congratulations to our Special Prize winners!

Customization Award (for the cleverest customization element): “Cityscape Stats” by Frooted Design

Veteran Minted artist Tanya of Frooted Design has captured the Customization Award with this incredible cityscape. Tall buildings mix with a water tower and billboard to create a dynamic scene. Set against a flat grey backdrop, the objects are created with thickly drawn lines resulting in a simple and elegant execution. Important birth details are called out on the various signage, “advertising” the important points of the big event.

Holiday Party Invitations Challenge: Special Prize Winners

Holiday season is just around the corner (or in the case of Halloween, practically here!) and Minted customers will soon be planning fun and festive parties. So we asked the Minted Community to design unique invitations that would make any holiday celebration the most anticipated one of the season. We were looking for all types of innovative holiday party invites, and the Community delivered! The winners below each stood out in one of our special prize categories. Congrats, winners!

Modern Elegance Award for the best design that is traditional and elegant, but still fresh: “Fête de Noël” by R studio

A bold but sophisticated linear faux foil pattern frames the party details in “Fête de Noël.” Reneé’s artistic, slightly edgy take on elegance is perfectly festive. The classic type provides a great counterpoint to the more modern border (not surprising coming from the designer behind a Minted Master Class Tutorial on typography!).

Domino & At Home With a Minted Artist: Kristi Kohut

This month, Minted artist Kristi Kohut of Hapi Art and Pattern gives Domino magazine a tour of her chic, art-filled Chicago home. We’re big fans of Kristi’s bright, bold pieces, and she chats with the magazine’s editors about how she decided to pursue art as career (instead of advertising!), where she draws inspiration, and how she goes about decorating her own home. You can purchase one of Kristi’s bold and beautiful pieces for yourself in her Minted shop, and don’t forget to check out all of the previous Art Home With a Minted Artist features.

Art Fair Challenge: Guest Judge’s Picks

We were beyond thrilled to have two of the world’s very best interior designers—who also happen to be prolific and accomplished bloggers—guest judge our recent Art Fair challenge. Paloma Contreras and Tobi Fairley are ladies to keep a very close eye on and luckily, through their respective blogs La Dolce Vita and Tobi’s Blog, it’s easy to do! I know you must be curious about which pieces caught their eye, so without further delay…

Paloma’s pick is “Lone Sunbather on Dunes” by Heather Nash. “This piece has stunning composition and vibrant colors” says Contreras. “I especially love the idea of this beautiful photograph printed on a large scale. It would be fabulous in virtually any room!”

Tobi chose Julie Song Ink‘s “Mingle.” “The first thing that caught my eye is the color—I am known for my use of color and this blue just grabbed my attention. But what really made me select this gorgeous artwork was the movement and excitement created by the swirls and splatters. It actually reminds me of the creative process I go through in my own work. It is a vibrant and electrifying work!”

Thank you, Paloma and Tobi, and big congratulations to Heather and Julie!
