Wedding Invitation Challenge: Special Prize Winners

We’re excited to announce the special prize winners of our To Have and To Hold Wedding Invitation Challenge! In this challenge we asked you to show us your freshest take on the classic wedding invitation, with original designs that engaged couples can’t find anywhere else. We were beyond wowed with everyone’s take on fresh modern designs! The designs below are the best in show for our special prize categories. Congratulations, winners!

The Trifecta Award based on the strength of submissions to this challenge: Phrosné Ras
We selected one designer to receive guaranteed placement in email, catalog,
and a homepage banner to help build his or her brand on Minted.

Featuring: Amazing Watercolor” | “Gold Portrait” | “Dainty Deco” | “The Wedding Bouquet” | “Enchanting Plum

Phrosné continues to perfectly execute bold and striking designs. She is a pro at delicate layering, and soft symmetric water-colors. Phrosné’s masterpieces pop against subtle backgrounds. Her compositions are often classic and elegant, but she’s not afraid to add a splash of dramatic boldness. Phrosné says, “making things beautiful – it truly feeds my soul.” We see this throughout her entire collection. We’re so grateful to have Phrosné in our community!

Collection Award for the designer who is guaranteed at least five total picks across the challenge and other wedding challenges: Lori Wemple

Featuring: Organic” | “Jardin” | “Floral Crown” | “Swoon” | “Monogram Floral

Lori’s submissions blew us away: she consistently crafts designs with intricate detail, striking typefaces, and well-chosen copy. Lori sprinkles subtle visual details throughout her pieces that add to the overall look without feeling crowded. She evokes a sense of fluidity throughout her work. We’re absolutely thrilled to have your work on Minted!

Enduring Elegance Award for the design that best sets the state for a sophisticated
elegant event while still being fresh and modern
Garden Flourish” by Kelly Schmidt

Garden flourish brings a clean yet rustic feel to an elegant wedding invitation. The curvilinear design and airy typeface of this piece remind us of a warm breeze on a beautiful summer day. The text below contrasts the swirls with formal block lettering and a clear, functional space for type. This design truly flourishes!

Art Fair Challenge: Guest Judge’s Picks

We were beyond thrilled to have two of the world’s very best interior designers—who also happen to be prolific and accomplished bloggers—guest judge our recent Art Fair challenge. Paloma Contreras and Tobi Fairley are ladies to keep a very close eye on and luckily, through their respective blogs La Dolce Vita and Tobi’s Blog, it’s easy to do! I know you must be curious about which pieces caught their eye, so without further delay…

Paloma’s pick is “Lone Sunbather on Dunes” by Heather Nash. “This piece has stunning composition and vibrant colors” says Contreras. “I especially love the idea of this beautiful photograph printed on a large scale. It would be fabulous in virtually any room!”

Tobi chose Julie Song Ink‘s “Mingle.” “The first thing that caught my eye is the color—I am known for my use of color and this blue just grabbed my attention. But what really made me select this gorgeous artwork was the movement and excitement created by the swirls and splatters. It actually reminds me of the creative process I go through in my own work. It is a vibrant and electrifying work!”

Thank you, Paloma and Tobi, and big congratulations to Heather and Julie!

Art Fair Challenge: Special Prize Winners

Think: Frieze New York. Art Basel Switzerland. Paris Photo LA. artMKT San Francisco. The latest Art Fair Challenge was inspired by art fairs all over the globe and we asked the Minted Community to submit innovative, envelope-pushing works of art to continue to grow our offerings—taking risks was highly encouraged! There were no design restrictions in this challenge and we accepted all mediums reproducible on paper. What we received was so exciting and we’re thrilled to announce the Special Prize Winners who stood out in the categories below!

Photography Award (for the best photographic art print): “Threaded Line” by Erin Niehenke

At first glance, “Threaded Line” appears to be a quiet print paying homage to the domestic arts. Upon closer inspection, there are many elements at play. A line of vintage spools features a rainbow of colored thread set against a bright white background.  The line diagonally intersects the background with a lone spool knocked on its side in the foreground.  The warm tones of the wood spools contrast with the background, and the eye’s focus goes back and forth between the side lying spool and the line.

Erin Niehenke lives in a small town in Pennsylvania with her family and revels in the creative process.

Non-Photo Holiday Card Challenge: Guest Judge’s Picks

We were really excited to have two of the hippest ladies we know pick their favorite non-photo holiday card to send out this year. A big thank you to Angela Tafoya and Kate Arends for taking their time to inspire our community. If you’re not already following their work, you’d be remiss not to check out Refinery 29 – SF Edition and Wit and Delight.

Angela Tafoya, an editor at Refinery 29, chose Trimmed Tree by Pistols because “I love the geometric elements in the tree along with the colors used here. It feels very different and refreshing for the holidays.”

Kate Arends was drawn to Fa-La-La-Lettered by Up Up Creative because when she “first saw this design I wished I had thought of it! So clever. I love the modern, clean palette and how friendly and fresh the graphic feels.”

Thank you so much Angela and Kate and big, big congratulations to Melissa Egan of Pistols and Julie Green of Up Up Creative!

R Studio and Students in Minted’s State of the Art Challenge

Minted artists are incredibly supportive of each other; they critique each others’ work, give suggestions, celebrate others’ wins, and often become good friends. Many see Minted as a type of “design school” and a valuable source for learning and inspiration. So it’s very fitting that we’re writing today about a Minted relationship that incorporates education on a whole new level! Longtime Mintie Renée Stevens of R Studio is a professor at SUNY Oswego in upstate New York. We were so happy and flattered to hear that last semester, she encouraged her graphic design students to submit their artwork to Minted’s State of the Art Challenge.

In a challenge with an incredible 1,044 art submissions, two of Renée’s students won Minted Editors’ Pick prizes! “The Mess” by Emily Hinckley and “Townie” by Melissa will both be up for sale on Minted.com soon. We see Minted as an artistic community, first and foremost, and nothing makes us happier than seeing artists take a risk and learn through the challenge process.

Emily, Renée, and Melissa

We were lucky enough to get to hear from Emily, Renée, and Melissa about their Minted experiences and about the inspiration for their work.

Guest Judges’ ‘OH WHAT FUN’ HOLIDAY CHALLENGE WINNERS!

We are very excited to announce the guest judge awards from the ‘Oh What Fun’ Holiday Challenge. We were honored to work with such wonderfully talented luminaries and our designers should be elated to have such talent handpick their work from the thousands of submissions.

Michael Boodro chose Wonderful Merry by chica design, out of Atlanta. Says Michael of his selection: “Like the holidays themselves, this card is a great mix of the nostalgic—that charming black and white photo—and the fresh—the vibrant red script.Boodro has been the editor in chief of ELLE DECOR since August 2010. He has also served as editor in chief of Martha Stewart Living, was the launch editor of Culture and Travel, was an editor in the Style Department of The New York Times Magazine and served as the editor in chief of Garden Design. He worked as features editor at Vogue for 11 years. He is the author of Stephen Sills and James Huniford’s design book Dwellings.

Vanessa Holden, Senior Vice President and Creative Director of West Elm, chose Ticket to Joy by San Francisco designer Spotted Whale Design. “Combining seasonal sentiment with great graphics and a slew of family fun facts, I love how this design allows the sender to truly personalize their holiday message – right down to including their family motto for 2013! Oh what fun indeed!” said Holden.

Victoria Smith of SF Girl By Bay chose Georgia designer Kelli Hall‘s Jingle Brights. “I like the nostalgic feeling of the vintage framed photograph,” says Smith. “It reminds me of my old family photographs. And I like it combined with the fun, bold typeface. It just stands out to me, and it’s a card I’d be likely to post on my fridge!”

Leila Lewis of Inspired by This selected So Much Merry by San Francisco-based Lizzy McGinn. “While the design is a little more simple, that’s why I fell in love with it,” says Lewis. “The focus is left to the image. It’s not an in-your-face holiday card, which means it can stay on someone’s fridge long past New Years!”

Huge congratulations to Angela Vellino, Elliot, Kelli Hall and Lizzy McGinn! This is really big! We hope you take a minute to enjoy this epic nod.

We couldn’t be more thrilled about this collaboration. Whenever we come across an empty nook or cranny in our homes, West Elm is our go-to stop for something both chic and useful. Also, we love that West Elm shares Minted’s commitment to supporting and promoting individual artists and artisans.
