How To: Get Great Family Photos (For Your Holiday Cards!)

Minted’s newest collection of holiday cards is now available (you can also see all of the winning holiday photo-card designs right here!), which means it’s time to start thinking about which card you’ll be mailing out this holiday season. If you decide to go the photo-card route, we know it can be a daunting task deciding on a single photo that perfectly captures your family. To help, I interviewed San Francisco-based kids photographer Sarah Hebenstreit of Modern Kids Co.—she photographs our founder and CEO Mariam Naficy’s holiday-card photo every year!—for her best tips on getting beautiful family pictures you’ll treasure for years to come.

1. Find the right photographer.
Make sure your photographer enjoys shooting kids. If you still have last year’s batch of holiday cards, go through the stack and pull a couple of favorites, then ask your friends who their photographer was. “Word of mouth is really the best recommendation,” says Sarah.

By Lauren Saylor of A Fabulous Fete

Fall Wedding Colors

Just because fall is right around the corner doesn’t mean you have to give up the idea of a bright, summery color palette for your wedding. One easy way to make summer hues work for fall is to add a moody touch to the overall palette by introducing a dark, saturated color. I love the combo of pale blues and corals mixed with deep, inky navy inspired by this pretty watercolor painting. Read on for more ideas and ways to incorporate this palette in your own wedding!

How To: Create an Art Gallery Wall at Home

How to create an art gallery wall at home

Buying and collecting art? Majorly fun. Figuring out where to hang everything? Sometimes not so fun. If you’re like me, you’ve probably come across a ton of inspiring images of art-gallery walls on Pinterest or in shelter magazines, with walls fabulously filled to the brim with beautifully framed pieces. But attempting to create something similar at home can be a little intimidating.

To inspire you to create an art-gallery wall of your own, we dropped by the homes of two Minted employees: our founder and CEO Mariam Naficy (top) and associate creative director Annie Clark (bottom).

“I wanted a wall that reflected my family and our love for travel and art, and that was deliberately un-stuffy. I loved incorporating a mirror I found in Paris, a piece of antique fabric I found in Turkey, and my children’s art.” —Mariam

“My home is a work in progress. I love that I can easily add a new piece or pin a photo to this ever-evolving corner gallery.” —Annie

San Francisco-based stylist Rosy Strazzeri-Fridman worked with the ladies to create gallery-wall displays that perfectly suited their individual styles. Here, she shares her best advice and tips. So dig through your closets, pull out those pieces you’ve been meaning to have framed, and get hanging!

How To: Style a Custom Print

By Victoria Smith of SF Girl by Bay

Minted Custom Print

I’m a big fan of Minted’s new line of art prints. There’s a few already hanging in my home, but for a while now I’ve been wanting to enlarge a custom print — one of my favorite images of my father who passed away last year. This particular photo is of him arriving in California for the first time after moving to Los Angeles from Toronto, Canada. It’s so stereotypical — him reaching up to grab a fresh orange from a tree, that it could almost be on a postcard. It reminds me of how excited and hopeful for a new future in a warm, sunny climate he must have been.

Minted Custom Print 2

So I asked the Minted folks if I might try out their custom print service and enlarge this print to hang in my dining room to remind me always of my dad. The photos was old – taken in the 50’s and like lots of family heirlooms and ephemera it wasn’t in the best of shape. But Minted enlarged it and framed it, making it look amazing. I couldn’t be more happy with it. Giving a gift like this at the holidays is so much more thoughtful than rushing out to the mall to buy yet another ‘thing’ someone probably doesn’t need. I love the idea of giving custom prints to friends and family. And you still have time to order your custom print, the last date for personalized art is December 17th. Here’s to happy holiday memories everyone. Enjoy the season.
