New Year’s Eve has never been a massive affair for us—usually we end up at home watching movies or playing board games with friends and family, snacking on chocolate fondue. We don’t put away Christmas decorations until New Year’s Day, so it still feels a bit like Christmas. When I’m tidying up I never quite know what to do with holiday cards, so this year I thought it would be neat to turn them into a garland for New Year’s Eve. I think I’ll even keep it up the rest of January to keep the mood festive for a few weeks longer. Happy New Year!

While you’re opening gifts, frosting cookies, and mixing eggnog, cue up some holiday cheer with our annual Yuletide playlist. This year’s compilation includes a nice mix of genres to encourage good cheer, mingling, and merriment. The playlist features songs from one of my favorite Seattle bands, Deep Sea Diver, as well as classics from Run-DMC. Enjoy!

To me, the holidays are just so much more magical with kids involved. I thought it would be fun if the kiddos had their own wrapping paper to wrap their gifts in (with mom’s help of course). This printable wrapping paper is the perfect thing to make your child feel special and also keep their hands busy for a while. Basically a Christmas miracle!

I love Bing Crosby’s “Silver Bells”—the song never fails to get me in a holiday mood. The tune also got me dreaming of a “Christmastime in the city”-themed holiday gathering, complete with all of the sights and sounds of a bustling city in the wintertime. I love the way the city sparkles in the winter, with glints of silvery chrome, glistening pavement, and even the swirling rivulets of melting show. To create an urban, wintry party look, I paired cement-gray–toned neutrals with accents of deep cranberry and bright ruby, and added a small dose of playful touches (like “naughty” and “nice” place cards) to complement the polished vibe.

The second I place Christmas gifts under the tree, my kids immediately ask me which ones belong to them. To make the packages easy to identify and to add some fun to the wrapping, I’ve come up with a plan to top the gifts with simple portrait tags. Here’s how to make your own.

I’ve always admired the beautiful meringue mushrooms on Christmas yule log cakes—they’re so fluffy and delicate-looking! As much as I love them, I’ve never gotten around to making them myself. The holiday season is just so busy that I can’t seem to find the time to bake meringues on top of everything else. When I saw this round ice cube tray at the dollar store though, I immediately knew it was just the shortcut I needed. Make your own chocolate mushrooms this holiday season—with this trick, they only takes a few minutes!
