From Kerry:  Every year I make two or three different dark-chocolate confections to give as gifts to family and friends. I love making homemade holiday presents—they’re guaranteed to be one of a kind and make people feel special, and isn’t that what holiday giving is all about? This has been my tradition for the past 15 years and now I enjoy sharing this with my daughter. One of the more recent additions to my candy repertoire is a dark-chocolate cookie-butter cup sprinkled with sea salt. There is something so amazing about the combination of chocolate, lightly sweet cookie butter, and a sprinkling of sea salt. Better still, it is super easy to make (translation: It’s really hard to mess this one up!). Since the holidays can be stressful enough, why make it more so with complicated and time-consuming projects? That’s my philosophy, at least. I hope you enjoy this recipe and maybe even your friends and family will, too!

Design to Dish: Chocolate Crinkle Cookies

This time of year, I just can’t get enough holiday baking! Holiday cookies are my absolute favorite treat during the Christmas season. We have a long list of family classics that we make year after year: peanut blossoms, molasses crinkles, Russian tea cakes, sugar cookies, snickerdoodles, and these chocolate crinkle cookies! They’re rich and fudgy, and the contrast between the dark chocolate cookie and snowy powdered sugar coating is really beautiful. They are, of course, fun to make and eat, but they’re also a great giveaway treat for friends, family, and neighbors. I love how they look paired with this cute “Gingerbread Home for the Holidays” card from Baumbirdy for Minted. If I were on-the-ball like I should be, I’d order these to send to all of my blogger friends, along with a box of homemade treats. There’s always hope for next year and, in the meantime, I’ll be eating more of these yummy chocolate crinkles!

Design to Dish: Sugared Pecans

With the holidays in full swing, you’re undoubtedly in need of lots of gifts. Besides the ones to go under the Christmas tree, there are gifts for neighbors, teachers, co-workers, party hosts and hostesses, and not to mention unexpected visitors who drop by! These sugared pecans are the perfect solution to all of those situations—they’re easy to make in bulk (each batch yields about four cups and takes about five minutes) and they last a loooooong time if stored in a sealed container. And, most importantly, they’re delicious—great on salads, cheese plates, ice cream, holiday desserts, and, let’s face it, straight off the pan. Package this sweet homemade gift in cellophane with a sprig of greenery and a cute holiday tag from Minted, like these “Holly Jolly” gift tags by Toast & Laurel.

Design to Dish: Mini S’mores Pies

Like most of America, we have family coming in from all over the country this week to celebrate Thanksgiving. My mom texted everyone to figure out the menu, so we have a magnificent feast to look forward to: smoked turkey, stuffing, fresh-baked rolls, corn, carrots, green beans, cheesy broccoli and cauliflower, pomegranate salad, candied yams plus mashed potatoes plus mashed sweet potatoes, and more types of pie than I can count on one hand. With the deliciousness bar set so high, I’ve been trying to figure out what I can contribute. What I’m making? These mini s’mores pies—not only are they perfect sweet treat to conclude Thanksgiving dinner, they just might steal the whole Turkey Day show!

Design to Dish: Spiced-Apple Pumpkin Bread

A few weeks ago, someone I follow on Instagram posted pictures of a harvest party they hosted, and it sounded like the dreamiest thing! My husband and I always say we need to start throwing an annual Fall party, but we just haven’t gotten around to kicking off the tradition. When we do, however, it will undoubtedly include all of the quintessential autumnal things a harvest party should have: hay bales, pumpkins, apple cider, crisp weather, cute invitations, and lots and lots of sweet and spicy baked goods. This yummy quick-bake bread combines my two favorite fall flavors—apple and pumpkin—plus an irresistible cinnamon sugar topping. Whether you’re hosting a delightful harvest party or just in the mood to bake, this spiced-apple pumpkin bread is a treat!

Design to Dish: Pumpkin Chocolate-Chip Snack Cake

Fall is my favorite time of year! I love the weather (sunny mixed with overcast, just the right amount of chill in the air), I love the activities (pumpkin patches, hayrides, apple picking), and most of all, I love the baked goods (apples, pumpkin, and spices galore)! One of my favorite fall flavor combinations is pumpkin spice and chocolate. I like it in all of it’s forms: muffins, breads, cookies, doughnuts, and this easy to make, easy to serve snack cake. It’s the perfect treat to serve at a low-key pumpkin carving party featuring these darling invitations by Hooray Creative.

Recipe: Dark and Stormy Cocktail

Looking for a simple, crowd-pleasing cocktail recipe to serve throughout the holiday season? Try this refreshing spin on a classic! It’s a cinch to make since it only requires two ingredients: dark rum and ginger beer. My friend introduced me to this cocktail during a weekend getaway to the Oregon coast and that’s all she wrote! I’ve been mixing this deliciously easy-drinking recipe ever since. (Fun fact: The original Bermudian method from 1800s calls for Gosling’s black rum and includes a great seafaring story.)

Dark and Stormy Cocktail
Makes one cocktail

• 2 ounces dark rum (such as Kraken Spiced Rum)
• 3 ounces ginger beer (such as Bundaberg Ginger Beer)
• ½ ounce fresh lime juice (preferably organic)
• Ice

Place several ice cubes in a glass. Pour lime juice, followed by ginger beer. Top with dark rum; add a lime wedge and gently stir.

Design to Dish: Cheddar Scallion Biscuits

We’re going through a biscuit phase in our family right now, and I just discovered a new favorite flavor combo: cheddar and scallions. I’ve known the two tasted good together, but I hadn’t tried them in my go-to buttermilk biscuit recipe until recently, and the result was kind of mind blowing!

cheddar scallion biscuits

I was worried they wouldn’t taste good topped with butter and honey—our usual biscuit-eating method!—but they were excellent. On their own, they were savory and just salty enough, and adding a drizzle of honey to the fresh-out-of-the-oven biscuits added a delicious sweetness. These easy-to-make biscuits are perfect with barbecue or a Sunday pot roast. And they’d be amazing topped with homemade sausage gravy for a hearty weekend breakfast.
