Laying Low

By Victoria Smith, SF Girl by Bay

Have you ever slept on a bed that’s just barely off the floor? When I was moving and my old bed frame had been sold (I had to downsize) I had my mattress just right there, smack dab on the hardwood floors. And you know what? It was super cozy! I don’t know what it is about laying low, but a mattress positioned so close to the floor gives me the best sleep ever. Maybe it’s like camping, or college, or something reminiscent to a fort, but whatever it is, it’s very comforting. I also tend to find it quite stylish. Do you think box springs have been a big scam all along by someone trying to convince we need something we actually don’t? Wouldn’t be the first time, would it? Here’s a few low lying looks I love – beds very near to the floor and those doing just fine sans box springs.

Indoor Winter

By Victoria Smith, SF Girl by Bay

Bringing nature inside is one of my favorite ways to cheer up when it’s cold and wintery outside. Paperwhites and Hyacinths are the perfect solution for the season because they can be forced to flower indoors any time of year. Their bulbs don’t even need soil — they can be forced open in a bit of shallow water alone; just add enough to cover the lower portion of the bulbs without submersing them. You’ll need just a vintage or glass bowl or shallow pot, some pebbles, a few big bulbs and some sunshine. Give it a try. Simple, and so, so pretty.

New Years Decorating

‘Tis the season for holiday parties, and just when you thought the festivities might be over, New Year’s Eve rolls up right around the corner. I’m one for staying in for the evening and celebrating with close friends and family.

It’s easy to decorate with lots of white candles flickering and I quite like this idea of blowing up a few balloons in assorted sizes and taping them to the wall. Pretty!
Here’s what I did last year…

How To: Style a Custom Print

By Victoria Smith of SF Girl by Bay

Minted Custom Print

I’m a big fan of Minted’s new line of art prints. There’s a few already hanging in my home, but for a while now I’ve been wanting to enlarge a custom print — one of my favorite images of my father who passed away last year. This particular photo is of him arriving in California for the first time after moving to Los Angeles from Toronto, Canada. It’s so stereotypical — him reaching up to grab a fresh orange from a tree, that it could almost be on a postcard. It reminds me of how excited and hopeful for a new future in a warm, sunny climate he must have been.

So I asked the Minted folks if I might try out their custom print service and enlarge this print to hang in my dining room to remind me always of my dad. The photos was old – taken in the 50’s and like lots of family heirlooms and ephemera it wasn’t in the best of shape. But Minted enlarged it and framed it, making it look amazing. I couldn’t be more happy with it. Giving a gift like this at the holidays is so much more thoughtful than rushing out to the mall to buy yet another ‘thing’ someone probably doesn’t need. I love the idea of giving custom prints to friends and family. And you still have time to order your custom print, the last date for personalized art is December 17th. Here’s to happy holiday memories everyone. Enjoy the season.
