Meet a Mintie: Leslie Hamer

We couldn’t be happier to have Leslie Hamer of Unless Someone Like You with us this afternoon. The catchy name of her design company comes from the Lorax, one of her favorite books that she still can’t read without crying. We think her genius, imagination, and wit rivals even Dr. Seuss so the name could not be more fitting.

At age nine, you wanted to be?
Definitely a scientist. Maybe an astronaut. As a child I was encouraged academically and musically, but drawing or painting wasn’t a part of my life until college. I still love science, and long geeky conversations.

How would you describe your style?
This is tough question! Like many designers I find it difficult to “see” my own work. I try to keep things simple and clean. I like negative space, strong typography.

What is your normal workflow or process like?
Ideas come from everywhere. Sometimes I sketch, sometimes I walk around and photograph things, sometimes I dive right into Illustrator. I work quickly and try not to over think anything.

How many iterations does it take for a design to become final?
As many as it takes! Each design is different. Some I rework to no end. Some just appear complete. I imagine it’s the same a writing a song, or composing music. Sometimes my ideas are clear and things just fall into place.

What tools, techniques, and mindsets do you find absolutely essential?
My Cintiq is indispensable. I couldn’t work without it, I cant imagine how I ever did! When I remember drawing with a plain wacom I still cringe a bit.

Minted Meet Up: Charleston

So sometimes, even with the best intentions it takes me ages to get pictures off my camera and onto the blog… I am dying for a camera that automatically downloads your pics wirelessly. BUT, I did so enjoy meeting Kelli Hall that I have to share these pics from our Charleston Meet Up with you.

We met at Baked, which not only has delicious, incredible, yummy treats, but also has a perfectly executed interior.

Baked in Charleston

Kelli was just absolutely the sweetest and her hair really is as long and gorgeous as it appears on her Minted profile pic.

Last pics from the NSS

I had a few additional pics from the National Stationery Show I thought those that weren’t able to go might enjoy…

The ladies walking the floor.

A cute Father’s Day card from Fugu Fugu Press. (By the way, Minted’s men’s personal stationery also makes a great Father’s Day gift!)

And if you have to say you’re sorry, isn’t this the sweetest way to do it? (Also from the talented Fugu folks.)

I loved these great greeting cards from Minted brand Twig & Fig over the bridge in Berkeley.

They are printed on this thick, wood-like paper that is very different!

Another really fun company I just loved discovering is Old Tom Foolery.

I really want to give this print to my Dad for Father’s Day–he had a stache until just a few years ago so it couldn’t be more perfect.

And this is a great witty holiday card to get you in the mood for our current Holiday Design Challenge–just nine (9!!!) days left to submit!

It is graduation season and this is a pretty funny thank you note. Minted’s personal stationery is a great gift for grads and we also have some kicking grad announcements, fyi.

And I can’t help but sharing this great birthday card.

Finally, I also got the chance to meet Liz  from Linda & Harriet. She makes the sweetest calendars that I’ve been sending as Christmas gifts for years. She also now has a permanent birthday calendar that I also love.

My last find was Rifle Paper Co. I love their hand painted graphics and calligraphy–it’s just so unusual.

And one final piece of eye candy to start this short week with… their stunning, hand carved recipe boxes.

Meet a Mintie: Jody Wody

Minted designer and part-time Minted contract employee Jody Wody is buckets of fun. She is a joy to be around and her work is always exciting–we love, love, love seeing something new and different and Jody always delivers!

At age nine, you wanted to be?
A gymnast, an illustrator for Disney (I used to practice by pausing my “Little Mermaid” VHS to draw the characters), and a “camera-man” for a sitcom (I thought that sounded very exciting).

When did you first realize you wanted to be a designer?
It was a sporadic and incremental process! My mom is a painter and sculptor, so she always had neat-o art supplies for me to play around with. When I was in elementary school, I got hold of her old Letraset transfers from the ’70s, I would incorporate the rub-on type and office-themed clipart into my drawings. Maybe that was my first foray into graphic design? I remember in eighth grade I designed the cover for our school’s literary magazine, which may have planted the seed for publication design, and in high school I wrote for the school newspaper, which allowed me to do layout and editorial illustrations as well.

Minted at the National Stationery Show

We held a little cocktail party after the National Stationery Show on Monday night to get to know the designers already in our community, as well as new people, too. Katherine made an adorable little invitation to pass out on the floor of the show.

Flowers in Minted colors with little Minted personal stationery gifts.

We covered the tables in our new wedding invitations and suites. Everyone remarked on how original all the designs were, as well as on how great the printing quality and paper were.

Don’t you just love fresh flowers? They can liven up even a convention center as big as Javits!

Our CEO and founder Mariam Naficy hard at work up until the party began!

A large group of our incredible community of designers made the trip out. From left: Minted Senior Manager of PR and Partnership Marketing Natasha Lawler, Stacey Day, Beth Perry, Amanda LarsenEmily Potts, Karly Depew, Minted CEO & Founder Mariam Naficy, Amy Ehmann, Tina Furjanic (Amy Ehmann of Design Lotus’s business partner), and Minted Community Relations Manager Katherine Cheng

Every day is Mother’s Day… or should be!

For several weeks leading up to Mother’s Day, we sponsored a giveaway with The Juicebox. The Juicebox is is a free weekly email for moms who want to simplify their lives and get more done. It was founded by Carley Knobloch, a life coach for moms and productivity expert. The grand prize was a mint Green Kodak digital camera and Minted photo personal stationery.

To enter, moms answered a question a day with a photo posted on the Juicebox’s Facebook page. Questions ranged from a photo from life B.K. (Before Kids) to a messy moment that was so over the top you had to catch in on camera to your favorite picture of your mom. It was so fun to see the entries come in–it’s really an honor to get to share in these special moments–and it does really made you feel like every day should be Mother’s Day!

Meet a Mintie(s): Allison & Jessica of The Social Type

Okay, so I realize it’s a little past Friday, but a bad flu and a few other minor delays later, and here we are at Tuesday! To make up for the wait, we have double the fun because we have both Allison and Jessica of The Social Type with us today. Allison has been a long time customer service maven here at Minted. She specializes in all the fancy custom printing our brands offer. Jessica is Allison’s husband’s childhood friend and they’ve known each other for about six years now. Both Allison and Jessica have been long time community members, but starting in 2010 they decided to team up and enter together. It seemed right for the partnership to just keep on growing! They had been collaborating on custom projects for about a year and a half and will launch their greeting card line this summer.

Allison at left, Jessica at right

At age nine, you wanted to be?

Allison: A greeting card crafter, a spy, or a professional ballerina.

Jessica: Whitney Houston…or a fashion designer

When did you first realize you wanted to be a designer?

Allison: I’m still trying to figure it out! There are so many different professions that I would like to say I am skilled at.

Jessica: I had an internship at Martin Williams an ad agency in Minneapolis. I was interning on the account management side of the business and quickly realized it wasn’t the side I wanted to be on…the creative teams were having all the fun.

Do you have any formal design training?

Allison: I have a BFA in Graphic Design.

Jessica: I have my Bachelors in Advertising and Certificate in Art Direction.
