Good for You Kids’ Art and State of the Art Challenge Special Prizes

Good for You Childrens’ Art Challenge

We have special prize winners for two art challenges for you today! In the Good for You Childrens’ Art Challenge, we asked the Minted Community of artists to channel their inner children to submit innovative and creative work for children’s rooms. We were thrilled with the result. Congratulations to the winners of our special prizes!

The Curvilinear Kid Award for the best art print that puts customers’ names or other personalizable details on a curvilinear path

The Little Miss” by Frooted Design

We think this piece by Frooted Design is awfully clever (there’s a boy version as well). Multiple layers evolve after the first glance – a silhouetted profile, first popularized in the mid eighteenth century, is placed in the center of the design and is accented by a stamp like treatment.  Lovely scrollwork helps to incorporate the vital birth announcement details – date, place, time and weight.  The child’s name shares the stage and is highlighted at the top with the secondary names noted in a graceful curved banner above the image.

Minted + West Elm Art Challenge Special Prizes

By Kirsten Wolfe, Minted Art Team

We are delighted by the work that was submitted for the Minted + West Elm Art Challenge—and we are delighted by our partnership as well—look for Minted in West Elm stores and starting in September.

One of my favorite elements about this challenge was the influx of new artists and the variety of new styles from our existing artists. It’s exciting to see work from well-established graphic artists like Rose Lindo delve into new territory for our collection (see her lovely piece, The Rapids). It’s equally exciting to meet new Minted artists, such as Holly Royval and Samantha French, and have the privilege to welcome them, and the other new artists, into our community.

I keep returning again and again to view these pieces and can’t wait for them to be available for sale—I’m holding spots for a few of these prints in my own home.

Unexpected Organic Award

Sun Drop” by Holly Royval

A mosaic of natural shapes hints at a variety of influences—sunflowers, a spiral of seashells, fossils embedded in the terrain. The syncopation of shapes, both long and short, are presented in a myriad of cascading colors on top of a white background. While the choice of materials suggests a reference to the design interest of the 1970’s in the natural world, the selection of colors in this piece is entirely modern.

Modern Sensibilities Special Prize Winners

By Kirsten Wolfe, Minted Art Team

We are playing a bit of catch up here at Minted art – and are so happy to (finally!) announce the special picks for the Modern Sensibilities Art Challenge. Each challenge tends to have its own flavor and this one stood out for strong graphics, the elevation of common objects and beautiful photographs.

Congratulations, winners!

Urban Chic Award for the best art print suited to a modern, urban home

Rings” by 2birdstone

A grid of thickly drawn black circles is interspersed in a pattern variation with varying colors of yellow and red. Stark in its simplicity, it’s the ultimate urban accessory – chic, modern and versatile. Mix with one of the other pieces from artist Ashley of 2birdstone for a larger wall. Perfect for a New York loft or Los Angeles apartment.

Call for Entries – Special Picks Part II

By Kirsten Wolfe, Minted Art Team

Here in the Bay Area, the weather is starting to get warmer, the days are growing long, and we are spending more time outdoors when not looking at Minted Art. A number of the special picks from our recent Call for Entries challenge remind us that inspiration can be found all around – whether from a retro style Ferris wheel or a monochromatic study of peppers, perhaps ready to be grilled on a light-filled evening.

Best Photograph

California Dreams by Alexandra Nazari

Los Angeles, CA

This photograph exemplifies the nature of its given title by presenting a leisurely activity against a cloudless California sky. The lack of horizon offers the viewer an unusual perspective that is simultaneously seductive as well as a bit disorienting – mimicking the experience of the ride on a Ferris wheel.  An iconic row of palm trees creates a lower border for the photograph while the bright orange cars on the wheel reach up and out to the sky.

On the Wall Art Special Prize Winners

By Kirsten Wolfe, Minted’s Art Team

Our On the Wall Art Challenge marked our largest number of art submissions yet – over 1,400 pieces from a growing group of artists for the community to evaluate, and our curatorial team to review. Our team was enthralled by the quality of the work and we were pleased to see both new and old members of our community expand the breadth of imagery and original media.

We developed a wide array of special prizes that were designed to push the Minted art envelope – and our community responded. We are very pleased to announce the following winners by category. Congratulations to these artists below.

 Edgy Photography Award

Construction” by Becky Nimoy

Jutting girders and an intersecting grid reveal a construction site set against a monochromatic sky. Look again and the image yields a highly contrasted series of lines to create a work of abstract beauty. Referencing iconic works in photographic history, this piece highlights a moment in time and captures the dynamic of the unfinished.

Little Journeys and Inspired Art Special Prize Winners

By Kirsten Wolfe, Minted Art Team

Little Journeys: The Nursery, Children’s, and Family Tree Wall Art Challenge

There is something magical about decorating a child’s room. We want the best for our children and look to use elements that will inspire and educate them. Art can help stimulate their imaginations, yet soothe them at the end of a day. These special prize picks from our Little Journeys Nursery, Children’s, and Family Tree Art Challenge do just that. Congratulations to our winners!

Part of the proceeds of the sale of these pieces, as well as those from our entire children’s collection, help to fund Every Mother Counts, a charitable organization founded by Christy Turlington Burns to increase education and support for reducing global maternal mortality.

Easy as ABC Award for the best design that teaches the alphabet by relating to illustrations in a clever way

Animals Alphabet by Alethea and Ruth

Delightful animals are interspersed among the whimsically rendered letters of the alphabet. This imaginative menagerie mixes land and water animals along with unusual color renditions that are sure to delight any child. Customize the print by adding your child’s name at the top.

Call for Entries – Special Picks Part I

By Kirsten Wolfe, Minted Art Team

The start of the New Year is always an excuse for me to evaluate my surroundings – and my focus usually lands on my walls. As it happens, we just selected our December’s special picks for Minted’s current art challenge (Call for Entries), and I’m incredibly pleased with the quality of the submissions. It was difficult for the Minted curatorial team to select our favorites, but we finally landed on the gorgeous work below.

We are picking monthly special prize winners, so be sure to submit your work before to 1/31/13 to be considered for the January special picks.

Lastly, we will announce voting awards and special picks in the next couple of weeks for a few outstanding challenges: Little Journeys (special picks), Be Inspired (special picks), and On the Wall (voting awards and special picks). Good luck to all!

Best Photograph

The Lake, PH Design

Central Coast, CA (New Minted Artist)

I’m drawn to the juxtaposition of color and texture in this image: the calm, liquid blue of the lake mixed with the linear, hard yellow surface of the reeds congregating in the foreground. At the upper edges of the image, additional reeds are reflected in the water.
