There are a lot of things to like about April. For one, the weather gets nicer and winter blues go away. Even when April showers do come along, you know they will bring May flowers. You get to start out the month playing clever pranks on people. (Didn’t you love Google’s clever play with Helvetica?) It is the month to gorge yourself with Peeps and chocolate bunnies (and participate in a Peeps diorama contest if you’re so inclined). April is also the month Minted celebrates its anniversary! Just when you thought April couldn’t get more awesome, we’re reminded that April is also Earth Month!

No one seems to capture joy and blissful happiness as well as wedding photographer, Kate Harrison. We’ve tracked her down and had her spill the beans about how she got into wedding photography and where she finds inspiration for all her stunning wedding photos. Kate Harrison is a Minted partner photographer.
How and when did you first get into photography?
I fell in love with photography when I was a teenager. My family still talks about how I burst into tears on my 16th birthday when I opened up an incredibly thoughtful and generous present: my first 35mm. I had coveted my sister’s for years.
Why did you choose to focus on wedding photography?
I didn’t know what to do with my camera for a long time. I worked in news, on landscapes, still life but none of it filled my soul. Years later I was a bridesmaid in my friend’s wedding and brought my camera. That day was one huge ah-ha moment. Weddings! I never thought I’d be interested in photographing weddings but I loved it! Wedding photography had always seemed so cheesy and staged to me, but I realized it didn’t have to be formulaic. Weddings are full of organic beauty, glamour, laughter, originality, art and the full range of our beautiful emotions. Weekly exposure to all that human goodness is such a gift and being able to capture it in my camera always astounds me.
Do you prefer traditional film photography or digital photography?
I shoot digitally but I love the look of film. I fiddle with my camera and lenses to give my images a film-eque quality.
