How we surprised the top winner of Minted’s 2019 Holiday Photo Card Challenge

Written by the Minted Team

It was Wednesday, August 28 at 1:15pm when unsuspecting Minted employees and artists joined what they thought was a regular conference call. Fast forward thirteen and a half minutes to Canadian artist Eve Schultz surrounded by a life-size Elf on a Shelf, a giant check for $12,000, and nearly a hundred Minted employees applauding and waving Canadian flags. It wasn’t easy surprising the top prize winner of our 2019 Non-Foil-Pressed Holiday Photo Card Challenge, but we wouldn’t have had it any other way.

Minted team clapping Elf surprises winner

Minted Founder & CEO Mariam Naficy surprises Eve Schultz in front of the Minted team while our community of artists stream and chat in to the live broadcast. The first artist to congratulate Eve via chat? Last year’s winner, Slovenian artist Petra Kern.

Our original plans of surprising Eve at Camp Minted were thwarted when she declined our invitation because of a pre-planned family vacation. We then began plotting to unsuspiciously get Eve out to San Francisco. What was our cover story? We told Eve that we wanted to conduct a series of “in-person media interviews with Minted artists for local press opportunities.” Shortly after she agreed to participate, we cast a fake reporter and video crew, and organized a joint employee and community business meeting on the day of her arrival. Watch the video of Minted Founder & CEO Mariam Naficy surprising Eve in front of the entire Minted office below.

2019 FOIL-PRESSED HOLIDAY PHOTO CARD CHALLENGE: 1ST PLACE WINNER

Written by Mariam Naficy, Founder & CEO at Minted

I’m thrilled to recognize Sweta Modi of Creo Study as the first-place winner of our 2019 So Very Merry Foil-Pressed Quickfire Photo Card Challenge! This is a major accomplishment as the Challenge was very competitive, with 2,091 submissions and nearly 500,000 votes. Sweta’s winning design, “Gilded Botanics” is minimalist and elegant with delicate, gold foil-pressed botanicals beautifully ornamenting the corners of the photo.

Sweta is from Mumbai, India and worked in the travel industry for 10 years before transitioning to a full-time freelance designer. She joined the Minted community in 2016 and coincidentally, her first Minted submission was to the Foil-Pressed Holiday Photo Card Challenge. Not only is Sweta a talented artist with 174 Minted Challenge wins under her belt, she pays it forward and helps other artists in the community improve their craft. She has given 922 critiques since she joined and was recently nominated by her peers for the 2019 Critique Award. We were thrilled that she travelled all the way from India to join us at Camp Minted! We have seen tremendous growth in her work over the past 3 years and she has even noted that she is “constantly learning and growing with every Challenge” and this is in many ways thanks to artists in the community who offer her “advice and words of encouragement.”

Congratulations, Sweta for winning the $3,000 top-voted prize in this Challenge!

Stay tuned! We’ll continue to announce Minted Holiday 2019 winners in the Minted Community > Winners section of Julep.

With thousands of submissions to this year’s Non-Foil and Foil-Pressed Holiday Photo Card Challenges, it was as difficult as ever to narrow down the designs in our final Holiday Card assortment. As always, the artist community surfaced emerging trends and displayed its continued ability to reinvent holiday card design.

We deeply value each and every submission from Minted’s community of independent artists and are so grateful for the time and creative energy you invest in your work.
