Drumroll, please! We’re excited to announce the two winners of our Minted x Every Mother Counts Contest, who will join Mariam Naficy and Christy Turlington Burns in Haiti this fall.
Please join us in congratulating our two winners, Karly Depew of Oscar & Emma and Briana Nielson! Karly and Briana participated in at least two of Minted’s Baby & Kids Challenges in 2017 and also submitted a very thoughtful written and video application, respectively. Both artists demonstrated excitement and passion in supporting EMC’s mission through their own personal stories and experiences with pregnancy and maternal healthcare.
Every Mother Counts (EMC) is a non-profit organization dedicated to making pregnancy and childbirth safe for every mother, everywhere. At the beginning of 2017, we kicked off a year-long contest where two Minted artists would be selected to join Minted Founder and CEO, Mariam Naficy, and EMC Founder Christy Turlington Burns on a trip to Haiti in fall 2018. On the trip, the winning artists will meet with one of EMC’s grantees and experience first-hand the work that they are doing to provide skilled and compassionate care to Haitian mothers throughout their pregnancies.
Karly Depew of Oscar & Emma
Karly has been with Minted since nearly the very start of the company. She is a talented graphic designer from Columbus, Ohio—she has 200 wins on Minted, won first place in Minted’s very first Holiday Photo Card Challenge and struck gold again in the same challenge in 2015. She is an active community member who is very well-liked, down-to-earth, and always willing to help fellow community members. (Karly Depew photo by Christa Kimble Photography)
In Karly’s Words
“While the road I have traveled in motherhood has had its bumps and curves, I am so thankful to have had proper care. I can’t imagine going through this journey without the support system I had. Every Mother Counts is an incredible organization and it would be an honor to be able to visit Haiti and see firsthand the impact it is making on the lives of those who truly need extra helping hands.”
Briana is an artist from Twin Falls, Idaho. She joined Minted in 2013 and won her first challenge in our On the Way! Baby Shower Invitations Challenge in 2014. In her words, she is a mother first. In her free time, she freelances creating designs and logos for local businesses and also serves on an art committee for the Refugee Center, volunteers at her church, and is an active member of the Relief Society, one of the largest women’s organizations in the world. Briana has two boys (ages 5 and 1). She comes from an artistic family, where everyone has talents in the art field from music to dance to painting and interior design. Her late grandpa’s brother is Don Bluth, a well-know animator and director (Pete’s Dragon, American Tale, and Anastasia, to name a few), so design is in her family’s blood. She grew up drawing and creating and painting, but when she discovered graphic design in college, she was immediately hooked.
In Briana’s Words
“I think it is an incredible gift and ability that women have to create life and devastating that preventable complications cause these strong and irreplaceable women to lose their lives in the process of creating a new one. As a mother, I felt the weight of responsibility to teach my children, by example, the importance of helping and serving others and as a beneficiary of competent prenatal care, I feel especially drawn to this specific cause.”
Thank you to everyone who applied to the contest. Minted has a powerful charitable partnership with EMC, and it was very rewarding to see our artist community help us support the cause. We hope that all of you can join us in continuing to support EMC’s efforts. Learn more about how you can support EMC here.
The trip to Haiti will take place in fall 2018. We will provide more updates about the trip later this year. Congrats again, winners!
