Though Timothy Dayton had been a family friend for years, he and Christen Huff had never crossed paths. That is, until Christen’s brother’s wedding. The pair began dating and after two-and-a-half years, Tim surprised Christen with a bedside proposal on Christmas morning. With Christen pregnant with their daughter, the Southern California-based couple decided to host an intimate destination wedding in Maui and planned their celebration in just four months. Guests were sent letterpressed invitations (“Inline Type” by Hooray Creative) printed in navy and pink, and the couple tied the knot in front of their 67 guests during an alfresco celebration complete with bold colors, vibrant florals, and tons of tropical touches.

How did you and Tim meet?
We met at my brother’s wedding. Tim has known my mother and brother for many years, but our paths had never crossed.
Tell us about the proposal!
We got engaged on Christmas morning. We had a house full of people who had stayed with us during the holidays and everyone knew what was about to happen but me. Tim surprised me on one knee me at 6 a.m. at my bedside. I was hardly awake.
Why did you decide to marry in Maui?
Tim and I knew that if we were to get married in Ventura our guest list would be way too large. We wanted something small but not too small, and we both love tropical, warm weather. Our wedding was planned in four months so it also had to be within the United States. Maui just worked!
How did you find your wedding venue?
Amy, my wedding planner, has a friend who’s also a wedding planner based in Hawaii. We asked for suggestions and, based on capacity, we found Sugar Beach Events.
Who made your wedding dress?
What was the wedding-dress shopping process like?
Well, it was a little bit of a challenge. I was three to four months pregnant when I started looking, then was six months pregnant at my wedding. So finding a style that would accommodate a baby bump was necessary. I tried on many dresses. But the two-piece blush gown that I wore (I think it was dress number 15) was perfect.
How did you hear about Minted?
Amy told me Minted was the best for quality and short turnaround!
How did you choose your wedding invitation (“Inline Type” by Hooray Creative)?
My style is very preppy and I wanted an invitation that was simple and clean, but also fun. Also, I always loved getting letterpressed invitations in the mail so that was a must for me. Our wedding palette was navy and pink so we chose an invitation design in those colors.
What were some of your favorite wedding-day details?
The decor! Amy and I worked with my color scheme to really make it a bright, fun wedding. We splurged on florals and it was worth it!
What were some of your fondest memories from the day?
The people—we ended up with 67 guests and about 50 were family. Although we wished everyone invited was able to go, the group we had there was our closest family and friends. The majority of our guests stayed at the Andaz Maui and no matter where we were, we ran into one of our guests. That is what I love about destination weddings—our guests were able to meet and bond with each other before the wedding day. It made the wedding day so special!
Where did you go on your honeymoon?
Lanai, to the Four Seasons at Manele
Any advice for brides who are starting to plan their wedding?
Trust your instincts when it comes to vendors. I spoke with every potential vendor; if I didn’t feel a connection I moved on. It’s your special day so go ahead and be picky!
