Guest Judge Pick: Cheers to a New Year! Photo Card Challenge
Janine Vangool is the Guest Judge of Minted’s 2016 Cheers to a New Year! Photo Card Challenge. Janine is the publisher, editor, and designer of UPPERCASE, a quarterly print magazine for the creative and curious. UPPERCASE publishes content inspired by design, typography, illustration, and craft. Her magazine and books celebrate the process of making, the commitment to craft and the art of living creatively. Janine got her start working as a freelance graphic designer in for arts and culture clients and has also taught typography and publication design at the college level. She has been a shop owner and bookseller, gallery curator, sold a line of greeting cards wholesale, made 10,000 books by hand (with lots of help!) and has sewn her own products for retail. She has a particular fondness for typewriters, a passion that has inspired a book about their graphic history. Her debut fabric collection is launching this June with Windham Fabrics. She is often asked, “Do you ever sleep?” To which she replies, “Yes! By the end of the day I’m exhausted!” She lives in Calgary, Canada, with her boardgame-designing husband and curious son.
Janine Vangool selected “Staggered” by Sara Hicks Malone, saying that she likes the playful yet simple typography. “The card looks fresh and inviting, and the multiple panes for photos makes it a great choice for a family card,” Janine says.
Sara Hicks Malone is an artist from Nashville, Tennessee, who joined the Minted artist community in 2011 and has won 165 awards in Minted Challenges.

Haskell Harris selected “Sweet Flora” by Elly, saying that she loves how the design feels equal parts nostalgic, modern, and inspired by nature. “And the subtle but festive color story is so incredibly versatile,” Haskell says.
Elly Liyana is a Singaporean artist based in Thailand. She joined the Minted community in 2009 and has 47 Minted awards to her name.
Bonnie Tsang is the Guest Judge of Minted’s [Foil-Pressed] “No Business Like Snow Business” Non Photo and Corporate Holiday Card Challenge. Bonnie is an editorial and commercial photographer with a focus on interiors, portraits, travel and food. With a keen eye for beautiful things, she is also a curator and visual social media consultant for which Time Magazine has named her as one of the “Top 30 Pinterest Curators to Follow.” She has spoken at conferences such as SXSW and taught several classes from her expertise in photography and social media.
Bonnie Tsang selected “Merry Line Art” by Dana Beckwith, but says that selecting just one design was “truly difficult.” “Everyone did an amazing job,” she says. “I picked Dana Beckwith’s entry because the design is simple, but festive at the same time. The gray against the gold makes this a little different from what I usually see. Lastly, I want this to be my holiday card to send out this year.”
Dana Beckwith is a Minted artist from Dallas, Texas, who joined the Minted community in 2012 and has won 16 Minted awards.
Caitlin Flemming is the Guest Judge of the [Foil-Pressed] “No Business Like Snow Business” Non Photo and Corporate Holiday Card Challenge. Caitlin Flemming Design was founded in San Francisco in 2011. Through her extensive travel and living abroad, Caitlin has developed her style with work that combines her love of mixing old and new. Caitlin is also the founder of lifestyle and interior design blog Sacramento Street, where she inspires her readers with daily posts on interiors, style and travel. In her spare time, she’s traveling the world and streets of San Francisco looking for the latest inspirational finds.
Caitlin Flemming says she loves the combination of print and script in Kristie Kern’s card design. “Paired with the simplicity of the wreath makes it the perfect holiday card,” Caitlin says.
