Minted Real Wedding: Angela & Brian in Aspen, CO

Angela Simmen and Brian Kelley, both resident physicians, first met while working in the same hospital. “We would catch each other’s eye while passing each other,” says Angela. After a romantic proposal during a ski trip to Colorado, the Michigan-based couple decided to host an intimate destination wedding and chose The Little Nell in Aspen for their celebration. Upon arrival, their 60 guests boarded a gondola to the top of Aspen Mountain to watch the couple exchange wedding vows, with stunning mountains views and changing leaves as their dramatic backdrop.

How did you and Brian meet?
We would catch each other’s eye while passing each other in the hospital, but it was an epic Halloween party that finally brought us together!

Tell us about the proposal!
February 16, 2015! It happened on the gondola during a ski trip to Keystone, Colorado. We had the gondola to ourselves, and I noticed Brian was acting a little strange. Midway up the mountain, he got down on one knee. Of course, I bawled the rest of the way up. It was perfect. Our friends Russell and Lindsay had gotten in the gondola in front of us and were ready to snap engagement photos at the top of the mountain. We loved having them there to share that perfect day!

How did you find your wedding venue The Little Nell?
Courtesy of my amazing older sister, Jen. Brian and I knew we wanted a small destination wedding and Colorado appealed to us for so many reasons. My sister started looking online right away and sent me the link to The Little Nell five days after our engagement. We booked it within a week!

What was the wedding-dress shopping process like?
My mom Rosie and my sister planned a full two days of dress shopping in Atlanta. We never made it past the first shop, Kelly’s Closet, where I found my dress!

How did you hear about Minted?
Our family has always used Minted for holiday cards, birthday invitations, etc. We had a short engagement (only 7 months) and needed an affordable, low-stress option for save-the-dates and invitations. Minted was the obvious choice.

How did the invitation (“Delicate Dots” by Ashley Hegarty) tie in to the wedding’s overall look?
They were simple, elegant, fun, no fuss. I love them!

Did you incorporate any other Minted elements into your wedding?
YES! We used Minted for our save-the-dates and place cards.

What were some of your favorite wedding-day details?
The gorgeous setting with the changing Aspen leaves; the food; the ceremony music provided by my two very talented friends, Megan and Dan Lombardo.

What were some of your fondest memories from the day?
Exchanging vows in front of our nearest and dearest; taking the gondola down the mountain and having a private moment to ourselves as newlyweds; the speeches; our dance party.

What was on the dinner menu?
Citrus farro salad, baby beet salad, oysters, lobster tail, crispy red trout, roasted filet of beef, herb roasted lamb, and s’mores by the firepit.

Any other wedding weekend festivities?
We had an amazing brunch the next day at Justice Snow’s in Aspen (highly recommended).

Where did you go on your honeymoon?
Rosewood Mayakoba in the Riviera Maya, Mexico. Can’t wait to go back.

Any advice for brides who are starting to plan their wedding?
Do what feels right for the two of you. We were fortunate to have family and friends who supported our decision to keep it small, and who were willing to travel to celebrate our special day. Prioritize what is most important and the rest will fall into place. The wedding day goes by too fast, so hold on to the little moments!
