Shakespeare-Inspired Spell Favors

“Double, double toil and trouble; Fire burn, and caldron bubble…”

Conjuring up a spooky Halloween dinner? Just add these Shakespeare “spell” favors inspired by lines from Macbeth. We took basic Halloween sweets and gave them a frightening twist with simple packaging and a printable label. Offer them up as macabre party treats straight out of Macbeth’s Act Four.

Shakespeare Spell Favor #1: Eye of Newt

Fillet of a fenny snake,
In the caldron boil and bake;
Eye of newt, and toe of frog,
Wool of bat, and tongue of dog,…

Supplies:
Speckled white jelly beans
Small hinged ring box (shown above) and Spell Favors printable labels (sized to fit the hinged boxes)
• 2″ paper box and Spell Favors printable labels (sized to fit 2″ square boxes)

Spotted white jelly beans make the perfect eye of newt! Stuff them in a box or sprinkle them about the plate as if they’ve escaped and are ready for a bubbling cauldron. For both projects, you can package the candies in a hinged ring box for a “cabinet of curiosities” feel or enclose them in a 2″ x 2″ favor box; we provided labels sized to fit both packaging options. Print labels on adhesive paper or plain paper and affix to boxes with rubber cement.

Darken your Hallow’s Eve dinner with macabre Shakespeare-inspired treats.

Shakespeare Spell Favor #2: Wolves’ Teeth

Double, double toil and trouble;
Fire burn, and caldron bubble.
…Scale of dragon; tooth of wolf;
Witches’ mummy; maw and gulf…

Supplies:
• Strawberry candy corn
• Large hinged ring box and Spell Favors printable labels (sized to fit the hinged boxes)
• 2″ paper box and Spell Favors printable labels (sized to fit 2″ square boxes)

Use strawberry candy corn for the look of a freshly extracted “tooth of wolf”. These little candy cuspids also work double-duty as a pre-dinner snack: Just box them and display them at each place setting. Guests can crack them open and gobble them up to keep snarling hunger at bay.
