DIY: Watermelon Piñatas

Written by Olivia Kanaley

Savor the final days of August with these sweet slices. Watermelon-shaped piñatas come together easily from that ubiquitous summer-serving staple: the paper plate. Dessert-sized plates make watermelon slices sized just right for place settings or favors.

• Paper plate (we used these)
• Tissue paper in red, white and green
• Black construction paper
• Scissors
• Craft glue
• Ruler
• Candy or small toys
• String (optional)

DIY Watermelon Pinatas

1. Cut paper plate in half with scissors.

2. Glue halves together using craft glue as shown. Let dry completely. Optional: If you’d like to hang your piñata, insert a piece of string between the layers before glueing.

3. Fill with candy and/or small favors. Cut a 2″ wide strip of red tissue paper and glue across the opening on the flat side of the piñata.

4. Cut a 1″ strip off folded red tissue paper sheet. Unfold the strip and cut fringe along one side with scissors.

5. Starting along the flat edge of the piñata, adhere tissue fringe with the fringed edges facing down. Repeat in rows until piñata is covered. Repeat on back side of piñata.

6. Cut a 1.5″ strip of white tissue paper and wrap around curved edge of piñata. Adhere with craft glue, gathering and smoothing as needed.

7. Cut a 1″ strip of green tissue paper and cut fringe along both sides. Adhere around curved edge of piñata so the fringe is visible on both sides.

8. Cut seed shapes from black paper and adhere to piñata with craft glue.
