It’s not every day that you get to help decorate and style a baby shower for the co-anchor of the Today Show, so we jumped at the chance to decorate Savannah Guthrie’s baby shower. Since she’s such a talented anchorwoman (and also a voracious reader!), we decided on a newspaper theme with a lot of typography and gender-neutral details (she and her husband Mike Feldman decided to keep the gender a surprise!).
Shower date: June 30, 2014
Location: The Glasshouses
Minted party decor: Jen Wick’s Big Top Personalizable Party Decor and Marabou’s Modern Mint Party Decor
Photographer: Samantha Okazaki/TODAY
Florist: Blossom and Branch
Event planning: Minted and Rock Paper Scissors Events
The Glasshouses venue in Manhattan’s Chelsea neighborhood was ideal: a white, modern blank slate where we could start from scratch. Taylor Creative, Inc. provided all the furniture, including the bookshelf below, which really emphasized the clean, white lines of the space and allowed the Minted decor to really pop. I was crazy about the chic leather couches in the back corner which created a more intimate lounge area in this big open space.
Savannah is incredibly charitable and asked guests to bring one book as a gift for her baby and another which would be donated to a child in need. When guests arrived, we asked them to place their books on the shelf and re-styled the shelf throughout the event.
Bright-yellow decorative touches included a school bus, rubber ducks, books, Saltwater sandals (so great for kids!), a seaplane, and a little bear with a yellow raincoat and hat. NYC-based event planner Ara Farnam of Rock Paper Scissors also wrapped some books in yellow paper.
The adding of books to the shelf (see Jenna Bush Hager, Kathie Lee Gifford, and Hoda Kotb above) made for such a nice photo opp! They were all super nice and gracious in person.
As guests arrived, they were offered a lemonade cocktail with a cute Minted straw and flag. Caterer Peter Callahan lined the trays with covers from famous children’s book, which was such an adorable touch.
A close-up of the delicious drinks served to guests!
He also used the children’s book covers to decorate boxes containing an array of hors d’oeuvres—so tiny and cute!
Blossom and Branch did an amazing job with the florals throughout, but this giant newspaper-wrapped vase of roses and hydrangeas displayed on the bar was my personal favorite.
We used a free, online crossword puzzle service to make up a baby shower quiz for guest to fill in and ordered pencils customized with #showersavannah; the pencils were placed in yellow Life Factory baby bottles.
The other activity guests participated in was a shower classic: onesie decorating, with cameos by Al Roker and Matt Lauer!
Most importantly, the mama-to-be was over the moon! Here she is with her mom and mother-in-law.
We were so thrilled to help shower Savannah with lots of love! She and her husband welcomed their daughter Vale Guthrie Feldman, who arrived early on Wednesday, August 13. Congratulations to Savannah and Mike!
