Happy Birthday Minted!

This week we celebrate Minted’s 6th Anniversary! Aren’t birthdays the best? In celebration of our turning six, we are taking a moment to reflect on how far we have come, and the artists and designers who have taken this journey with us. The very best thing about how much we have grown over the last six years is having our community grow with us.

We’ve asked six fantastic Community Artists a few questions about their artistic style, how it has progressed since joining the Minted Artist Community and where they see their creative selves headed next.

Phrosné Ras

(Beautiful Embellishment Save The Date Cards)

Q: What year did you join the Minted Community?

A: 2012, July

Q: How would you describe your current design style/aesthetic?

A: romantic, modern, eclectic. I don’t really have a definite answer here – I usually sit down and start designing without planning.

Q: How would you like to see yourself grow as an artist in the upcoming years?

A: I don’t usually plan like that..but for one thing, I hope I can still say that I honestly love what I do every single day. And I hope it’s beautiful.

(On a Slant Wedding Invitations)

Q: What year did you join the Minted Community?

A: 2008 (first challenge!)

Q: How would you describe your current design style/aesthetic?

A: This is so tough! I would say well thought out and clean typography is certainly apart of my style. Young at heart, out of the box.

Q: How would you like to see yourself grow as an artist in the upcoming years?

A: I would like to spend more time daydreaming, brainstorming and finding inspiration in unexpected places. I think all too often I get caught up in the production side of things and my work lacks something because I’m just recycling the same ideas over and over.

Eric Beckett / GeekInk Design

(Slated Forever Wedding Invitations)

Q: What year did you join the Minted Community?

A:  I joined Minted in 2011, when I was looking for inspiration to design invites to my own wedding.

Q: How would you describe your current design style/aesthetic?

A:  My design aesthetic leans toward the vintage/retro look, with a bit of a modern twist thrown in. I find that using and manipulating fonts in interesting ways is where I tend to shine and feel the most comfortable. Pretty flowers and florals are my nemesis.

Q: How would you like to see yourself grow as an artist in the upcoming years?

A: I think I would really like to find my place in the art print challenges. I haven’t quite figured out how I fit in to that whole world yet. I’m just in awe of the designers who can turn out all these amazing art prints challenge after challenge.

Jennifer Morehead

(Fox Geometry Limited Edition Print)

Q: What year did you join the Minted Community?

A: 2013

Q: How would you describe your current design style/aesthetic?

A: abstract, contemporary, minimalist

Q: How would you like to see yourself grow as an artist in the upcoming years?

A: I am still finding myself as a designer. I want to explore  elements of mixed media combined with graphic design for art prints and gain more experience with typography for greeting cards and invitations. The Minted challenges really push me to complete projects and timely manner and provide a theme with which to keep ideas focused.

Ashley Peterson / 2birdstone

(Painted Eggs Limited Edition Print)

Q: What year did you join the Minted Community?

A: I joined in 2008 but didn’t enter my first challenge until March of 2009.

Q: How would you describe your current design style/aesthetic?

A: Good question! Can I say eclectic? I like to draw inspiration for many sources with an eye to creating something unique and “new.” Beyond making a cool design I love to add a little twist of off-beat humor. I definitely don’t take myself or my work too seriously.

Q: How would you like to see yourself grow as an artist in the upcoming years?

A: In the next couple of years I’d like to pass the 50 wins mark and have developed a loyal following that chants my name when I walk down the street.

Erica Krystek

(The Winning Ticket Wedding Invitations)

Q: What year did you join the Minted Community?

A: 2013

Q: How would you describe your current design style/aesthetic?

A: What you aspire for your style to be can often be different than the outcome. I’d say the result is something that’s more eclectic, fun and contemporary, though I’d love to say modern and trendsetting like so many of the designers (and their work) that I admire. Hopefully I’ll get there someday.

Q: How would you like to see yourself grow as an artist in the upcoming years?

A: I’d love to grow and improve in areas that I feel I am the weakest. Specifically wedding challenges and broad, open-ended art contests. For some reason when the contest is very narrow thematically (like Valentine’s Day’s or a smaller holiday) I feel like I am able to tap into my creativity much more effectively than when it’s a broad-reaching category where mostly anything goes. In those instances my brain tends to shut down. I’d also love to be able to illustrate in a way that is more sophisticated than cute.
