Nothing says Fourth of July like red, white and blue. Why not celebrate Independence Day with some red, white and blue cupcakes as the star of your summer picnic? I recently found some cupcake dividers at my local cake supply shop, but you could make some from card stock and create your own striped cupcakes. To make it easy to fill, put each color in its own icing bag, so you can target your color exactly where you want. Why have ho-hum cupcakes when you can easily add some patriotic fun to your BBQ!
Batter Babies (dividers)
White Cake Mix
Icing/Pastry Bags (disposable for easy clean up)
Step 1: Mix your cake mix according to directions. Separate batter evenly into 3 bowls. Add red food coloring to the first bowl. Mix well. Add more color to make it really bright.
Step 2: Add blue food coloring to the second bowl. Mix well. Add more color if necessary. Leave third bowl plain.
Step 3: Take an icing bag and put it inside a tall glass or mason jar. Fold over edges around the top of the jar to hold it open so you can fill the bag.
Step 4: Fill a bag with each color of batter. Twist and secure tops with twist ties.
Step 5: Line your cupcake pan with liners. Add two dividers inside the liners, spread them apart and press down to make 3 even sections to fill the cupcake liner with. Trim off the tip of each color bag and squeeze to fill each section with batter. Return bag of batter to glass, tip down, immediately to keep from leaking all over the place. Repeat with remaining cupcake spots.
Step 6: You only get a few cupcake liners with each set, so you will need to reuse them to fill the entire pan. Gently grasp the top of both dividers and gently pull up at the same time. Place the dividers in the next cup slot and continue on filling the pan. Remove all dividers before baking.
Step 7: Bake cupcakes as directed on the box.
Step 8: Cool cupcakes on rack and add frosting if desired. Psst…if you frost the tops completely, your guests will be delighted when they bite into it and see your homage to the USA in their cupcake.
You can’t go wrong with festive cupcakes this Fourth of July.3 COMMENTS
