I feel like typography could play a stronger role here. Have you considered different typefaces? Serif vs. sans-serif? Even a combination of different fonts, different personalities that might connect with the drawing style or animal? I like the variety in scale and relationship to the animals, in some cases integrated, or having the animal interacting in some way. Others, it might need to be a little closer to the animal to avoid confusion (e.g. Penguin and Quail). I do like the playful and fun approaching I can imagine this hanging in a child's room with the parents helping educate the child.
