Does the more impressionistic approach work well for the pines in the distance, or should I have been more meticulous about detail?

it is great as it is, working as a depth of field focus on the foreground. The detail in the wood is very nice and works well with the softness in the trees.

I like that the pine trees in the distance are not as detailed. Gives the impression of being far away and adds visual interest. You have such detailed work in the foreground, that this loose style of painting the trees is almost needed in this piece. Good luck!

I agree that the looser background is perfect as is!

No, I like how the pines look in the distance. If they had meticulous detail they would fight for attention with your foreground. Lovely work!

I think it works as is. With more detail, it might've been more busy-looking or detracted from the details elsewhere?

I like the suggestion of the pines. Their shapes added to that beautiful green create a perfect calm counterpart to the colors and detail in the foreground.
