comments from Carrie:

This holiday card was inspired by the colors in the photo. I love the blue-green and red combo for Christmas! The pineapple and fabric-style background are both symbols of a traditional southern home.

Like the colors you have used and the pattern in the background. I get the concept of the pineapple, but I think it takes away from the focus of the image or rather competes with it. I would almost like to see the image take focus on the upper half of the card or you could try taking the first 2 lines of the greeting and place it above, and use the blue-green color for it. See how that looks :)

Thanks Sandhya. I was hoping to get some good feedback on this one. I wasn't sure if the pineapple was too literal and too prominent. I'll play around with your suggestions.

Designwise, I really liked the pineapple. It added a nice counterpoint the rest of the card, and added a lot of interest. Plus, it was a nicely drawn pineapple. I am not sure if you drew it yourself, or if it was a piece of clipart (original art is very much encouraged) but when you took it out, the card got kind of boring really fast. Not really boring, but a lot less interesting. I do like your colors and the pattern. I was not sure of the concept, however - a moving announcement as a Christmas card seems kind of a stretch, and would not apply to a whole lot of people, but I felt the layout worked a lot better than it does now.

That was actually artwork that a purchased awhile back from my friend (and very talented illustrator), Kimberly Schwede. I have since gotten better at creating my own artwork, but I really liked her pineapple so I just edited her original one a bit. Thanks for the feedback Alex. I'll think more about how to incorporate that pineapple without it being too overbearing.

I've seen Kimberly's work and think it's great. She entered the last challenge and I was hoping her stuff would de better than they did.

One more thing (since there is only 3 entries so far, so you're getting all the attention) on your design as it stands right at this instant - taking out that block of text in the middle, and just having their names etc. really helped the layout and gave it more focus.

I like how you have got the pineapple back with a color palette similar to the rest of it. It gels well now more so than before although I would try getting it to the left of the type with "the richardson" in one line and "family" as the second line :)

How would the pineapple look between Happy and Holidays?

I think it looks nice with the letters wrapping around the pineapple. Good job.

I kinda like this, although i would watch the type on the lower half - its too close to the edge. good work :)

I guess you would really have to know Southern background for this one, it took a while to figure out what the pineapple had to do with anything... I really wonder if other family members outside the south would get it or if they would lose the connection

Prescilla on Sep 19, 2008 at 9:07am

the pineapple hit home, honestly. i'm from hawaii so this design would be big there. it also takes an interesting twist on holiday. you should market this in hawaii. :)

I love the pineapple...really brings home the idea of Christmas from a warm climate. I would love to send this to my family and friends as a holiday card. The blue and red combination is also such a refreshing take on holiday colors.

I love the colors and the pineapple. You did a great job mixing traditional elements with a more geometric pattern.
