Holiday Photo Card Challenge: Guest Judges’ Picks

It is with great pleasure that we announce our Guest Judges’ Picks for the this year’s Let it Snow! Holiday + New Year’s Photo Card Challenge. A big thank you to our guest judges Oma Blaise Ford of Better Homes and Gardens magazine, Jeffrey Alan Marks of Bravo’s Million Dollar Decorators, blogger Stephanie Morgan of Modern Parents Messy Kids, and Elaina Sullivan of Domino magazine for their stellar selections and for taking the time to comb through the thousands of photo-card entries that were submitted this year. In addition to being included in Minted’s 2014 holiday assortment, all of the winning designers will also receive an additional $500 prize. Congratulations!

Oma Blaise Ford
Oma Blaise Ford is the Executive Editor for Better Homes and Gardens. Prior to taking up that post in 2011, she headed up the magazine’s Home Design department for nine years. When not busy wielding her editor’s pen and keyboard, she’s an inveterate dinner party host and can usually be found in the kitchen mixing up a casual meal and a great cocktail for friends.

“What can I say, I’m a sucker for that tag shape and I love the unexpected dark background for a holiday card,” says Ford of Snow & Ivy‘s Chalk & Holly card. “The design nicely frames the photo—I suspect it could even elevate a less than fabulous shot—and I love that it could be used as an oversize gift tag as well as traditional card. And the hole at the top just begs to be pinned to your bulletin board or strung on the tree, and not tossed in the recycle bin.”

Holiday Photo Card Challenge: Surprising Our Winner!

Our annual holiday photo card challenge is always the biggest challenge of the year and holds a very special place in our hearts. So every year, we try to come up with a fun way to surprise the 1st place winner.

In 2012, we surprised Angela Marzuki by asking her to hop on a Skype call with us to discuss using Dropbox (video here). In 2013, we planned a would-be-routine Minted Meetup in Jill De Haan’s hometown, with our Founder & CEO Mariam Naficy as the surprise guest with the big news (see it here). This year, we switched things up just a bit. Watch the video below to see the surprise for winner Jennifer Wick and read all the details below!

We asked Jen to come out to San Francisco to attend a (non-existent) Minted Board Meeting and give feedback as a member of the Minted Community.

Meanwhile, we decorated our office with tons of bunting banners, balloons, crepe paper, and sweet treats in anticipation of her arrival. We invited all the employees in our SF office to write her a congratulatory note and come join in the surprise celebration.

Holiday Photo Card Challenge: 1st Place Winner

It’s the moment we’ve all been waiting for!

We couldn’t be happier for Jen Wick and her big win! She expertly combines playful florals and original typography in this elegant holiday card. The festive winter flora harmoniously surround the delicate diamond. The mixture of serif, sans serif, and script artfully reinforces the balance of modern and traditional and the subtle dotted outline creates a beautiful illusion of hand-stitching that frames the design perfectly. “Storied Joy” is simply that. Congratulations, Jen – you’re amazing!

For this year’s winner surprise, we did something a little different from what we’ve ever done before. Check back tomorrow to read about the surprise and see Jen’s reaction to the big news!

Jessica’s unexpected color palette and playful layout is truly a work of art. The expressiveness of the script gives the design a joyful energy, while the modern sans serif type helps to balance and ground the composition. Jessica’s designs always have such a positive, cheerful feel to them, and “Peaceful Wish” is a beautiful example. We love how the stylized holiday greenery illustrations seem to dance around the type, creating a perfectly festive frame.

An ode to mid-century design, this card by Stacey Meacham is lovely in its simplicity. A lone pine sprig adorned with colorful berries anchors one corner, while a modern greeting in a looping script sweeps across the bottom of the card. Festive and bright with seasonal colors, “Art Deco Pines” is sure to make for a memorable keepsake when combined with a holiday photo. Beautiful, Stacey!

It’s amazing that Annie placed at #4 in her very 1st Minted challenge. But this design makes it easy to see why! The beautiful calligraphy in Annie’s classic design makes us nostalgic for the traditions of the holiday season. Reminiscent of hand-written wish lists and satin red ribbons, the letters create an elegant accent to any holiday photo. The addition of the festive decorations around the “and” makes this design both very merry and very bright!

There is really nothing I love more than a fresh take on a full-bleed design! Leave it to the ever-amazing Kristen Smith to create just that. Kristen’s bold hand-lettered greeting will easily pop with almost any photo behind it and the swashes and swirls give it just the right amount of holiday cheer. As anyone here in the office can tell you, it was love at first sight when I saw this card, and I’m thrilled to see designers and customers love it as much as I do!

Petra’s bold and beautiful card is one-of-a-kind. I love how the rich gold hand-drawn flora looks illuminated against the black backdrop. The scattered dots make the entire design glow, perfectly framing the Noel greeting. The color palette takes us back to the days of Gatsby-esque opulance, yet her design is still fresh and modern. “Shine Like Gold” is one for the ages!

Kelli Hall is the master of minimalism. She has an uncanny ability to strip a design of fussy embellishments without making it feel cold or stark. Her 7th place winning design, “Glaze,” is no exception. The sweeping curve of her hand-lettered joy makes for a striking layout, while the delicate type retains the decidedly modern feeling of the design. It takes incredible skill to put together such a beautiful composition, and here Kelli makes it look effortless.

Playing off the ever-festive chalkboard trend, Eric has created yet another holiday masterpiece with “Merry Little Chalkboard.” An abundance of details fills the card, including ribbons and banners with flowing text, scrolls, snowflakes, and pine boughs. Expertly mixing type styles and intertwined imagery, Eric is truly a genius in the art of inspired lettering.
