Meet a Mintie: Stacey Day

Stacey Day is an Alabama-based designer who creates designs that are layered, bold, tactile and deeply rooted in contemporary fashion. Since joining the community in December 2008, Stacey has always surprised us with unexpected pairings of textures and elements, plus a knack for color. Her talent has become a force unto itself. Besides racking up multiple top-25 wins in the recent Holiday Spectacular, Stacey was also one of just four designers hand-picked from the Breakout Wedding Challenge to launch an exclusive wedding line on Minted this winter. After working with Stacey on this feature, I have one comment –this designer is the real deal.

Holiday Inspiration Boards

Holiday inspiration comes in all sorts of forms and fancies, and today, they are coming your way in the form of holiday-themed inspiration boards. We asked designers in our 2010 holiday collection to create boards showing off some of the elements that helped them get into the holiday spirit and inspired the creation of their designs. Take a look at a few below and see many more here.

Meet a Mintie: Moglea

Meg Gleason of Moglea is as you would expect after looking at her designs — warm, charming, down-to-earth and infinitely creative.  She combines a whimsical, craft-and-nature-inspired illustrative style with an instinctive sensibility for typography and color selection. She first caught our eye about a year ago, in the Be Mine Valentine Challenge. Her design, “Message from the Birds,” announced that a new designer with a decidely unique point of view had entered the scene. Since then, it’s been a pleasure to watch her designs unfold and evolve. Let’s get to know Meg a bit better in today’s Meet a Mintie.

My whole childhood I felt destined and determined to become an orthodontist—I really liked my orthodontist and I wanted to improve people’s lives in someway—so I started out in Biology in school. The funny thing is,

Minted Selects Final Wedding Collection Winners

Dear Designers,

As you know, the designs we received in the “Happily Ever After” wedding challenge were spectacular.  What a body of work to congratulate the entire Minted community on!  The designs were romantic and touching, and made many of us dream of marrying or re-living our wedding day just to use your designs!  So many designs conjured up gorgeous wedding styling thoughts in our heads.

We agonized as a company for days and have had a terribly difficult time choosing the Editor’s Pick wedding collection winners and special award winners.  There were about 10 other designers who were very close to being chosen, and each will be receiving a separate, special communication from us by Monday.

Having said that, we are thrilled to announce the winners, who will be invited to join Laura Hankins in launching wedding collections

Meet a Mintie: Karen Glenn

Since joining the Minted design community in July of 2009, Utah-based designer Karen Glenn has been a humorous, thoughtful, and warm pillar of the design community.  She combines a clean and friendly design aesthetic with a passion for helping others. When she’s not running her newly launched design business or trading design tips with designers in the forum, she’s designing for (and oftentimes winning) minted design challenges.  It’s my pleasure to present this week’s Meet a Mintie.

Tell us a bit about yourself and how you got your start as a designer.

I quite literally fell into life as a designer, and have bumped my way along ever since! While I was in college (studying theater), my boyfriend of the time was working at a small studio building stained glass windows.

Meet a Mintie: Dish & Spoon

Carrie of Dish & Spoon broke records with Robot Friends, the highest-scoring design in Minted design challenge history. It scored a 4.12 out of 5 in the Make A Wish Birthday Party Challenge and won over voters with its whimsical yet modern illustrations of robots. Carrie’s design style is a mix of illustrative and modern, with a touch of handicraft and fun. Looking at her body of work, you get the sense that she is a smart, sophisticated, and deliberate designer who crafts her designs with the utmost precision and thought — an observation verified by our production team, who swears that her art files are always immaculate and a breeze to work with. I’ve been a huge fan of hers since she submitted the so-adorable-it-hurts design “You’re a Blast” to the Be Mine Valentine Challenge and was excited to catch up with the creative genius behind Dish & Spoon in this week’s Meet a Mintie.

Tell us a bit about yourself.

I am a traditionally schooled graphic designer.  I went to school and studied that and never changed my major, which is pretty rare. At the time, I wanted to get into web design, so I took a lot of classes like Flash and Animation, thinking that it’s what I wanted to do. Luckily

Minties in the City

When you are part of an online community, you spend a lot of time getting to know people through email, forums, online chat, and the phone. Nothing replaces actual face-to-face interaction though and whenever possible, we love getting together with designers for a cup of coffee, a cocktail, or lunch.

(Quick shout out: if you are ever in SF, drop us an email! We’d love to meet up).

Last week, we had a super-sized Minted Meet Up by inviting three designers from different parts of the U.S. to join us in San Francisco for a few days. The lucky designers — or should I say, the designers we were lucky to be able to hang out with — were Brandy of Marabou Design (Seattle, WA), Sydney Newsom (Dothan, AL), and Amy of Design Lotus (Baltimore, MD).

(L-R) Sydney Newsom, Amy, Kerry of Paper Dahlia, Mariam, Brandy, Annie Clark, Jody of Jody Wody, Robert of Waui Designs; (Bottom) Andres Montano

This was our first time ever inviting designers to come to SF and needless to say, we were really excited.
