Ohio Mintie Meet Up

In January, Paige Rothhaar of cadence paige design posted in the Minted forum about an informal Mintie gathering in Worthington, Ohio – just outside of Columbus. Being from the Buckeye State myself, I was really excited to see so many fabulous Minted designers would be in attendance and decided I’d have to make it out for the event. I flew out a month later for the meetup at Igloo Letterpress and had a wonderful time learning how to use the antique presses while stealing moments to chat over some pop and snacks with the girls. It was really fun to see some familiar faces and to meet some brand new designers as well.

Allison Chapman is the owner of Igloo Letterpress in Worthington. She was wonderful to share her studio with us for a few hours. She has a number of antique letterpresses in her studio and showed us how each one worked.

Mark Your Calendars: Save the Date Challenge Special Prizes

Save the dates is personally one of my favorite categories on Minted. Often times these announcements are a bit more casual than wedding invitations, which leaves room for all kinds of creativity. Choosing save the dates is also quite likely the first time couples decide on how to express themselves, together. They take the opportunity before the wedding planning chaos really heats up to send a note to their friends and family saying hey, write this down, we’re getting hitched. In the Mark Your Calendars: Save the Date Challenge, we looked to the Minted community for unique and stylish ways for our customers to spread the word about their upcoming nuptials. We weren’t disappointed. Below are the stunning special prize winners for this challenge. I feel so lucky to be able to share these with everyone. Congratulations designers!

Thank You Minties

Being obsessed with great design and beautiful paper, you’d think the biggest perk of my job here at Minted would be my ever expanding stationery collection. It is quite lovely. However, the very best part of my job is getting to correspond with the immensely talented designers who comprise the Minted Community. In December when you’d think holiday cards would be old news to us, Jen and I were positively giddy to open all of the fun cards and thoughtful treats that came our way. Thank you so much for thinking of Minted this holiday season!

Amy Ehmann of Design Lotus created this design for us during our first ever Minted t-shirt challenge in Spring of 2010. She used bits and pieces from winning Minted designs to create the heart. We were so excited to receive letterpress prints from Amy for everyone on the team this year and even more impressed when we heard Meg Gleason of Moglea printed them herself at her letterpress in Iowa. You can see some fun behind the scenes photos on Meg’s blog.

I did a bit of decorating with designer cards at my apartment. They were by far the most unique cards I received this year and look beautiful all together. I may never take them down.

Kelli Hall sent us this folded version of her “Statement Wreath” holiday card, doubling as a birth announcement. Inside is an adorable photo of her family’s newest addition. Jack Knoebber of jackmove sent us a non-photo version of “Etched,” Jenna Lyons’ favorite holiday card of the season. We were delighted to open a small box from Megan Davis of toast & laurel to find a sweet muslin bag with her perfectly Texan holiday card. She also included this sparkly jingle bell.

Hailey Myziuk of Hello Hailey sent us her “Good Tidings” holiday card with a photo of Mucha, her cat. His whiskers are adorable! We love Wendy Fessler’s rounded corner card and the fantastic photo of her daughters. On the back she included some great shots from a trip to San Francisco and a lovely note. We were big fans of her Wolverine stamp on the matching red envelope.

Liz Libré of Linda and Harriett sent us her “Handlettered Merry Christmas” with hand drawn Christmas trees and stars as accents. This card looks great in yellow and we really appreciate the personalized touch. Cécile Kotsch of Cécile Paper Lounge sent us a beautiful photo card that was similar to her “Magie de Noel” design in a captivating purple. Her very cute little one matches perfectly.

Emily Ranneby knows us far too well. The way to our hearts is truly through our stomachs and we could not get enough of the Swedish chocolates she sent our way. They were so yummy and we loved the type driven packaging design. These were the perfect complement to her scripty holiday cards.

Thank you so much Minties! We hope you have a wonderful weekend.

Head Over Heels Special Prize Winners Part 2

I have really enjoyed taking a detour from the always lovely, but slightly chaotic, holiday season to take in all of the gorgeous winners of our Head Over Heels wedding challenge. So many fantastic designs came in and it’s really fun to see where they’ve landed when it comes to our special prize categories. The creativity abounds in this collection of stylish and specific wedding invitations and I feel quite honored to present them here. Congratulations, designers!

Breath of Fresh Air Award for the best fresh take on a classic (formal) wedding invitation:

Simple Scallop” by Laura Hankins

“Simple Scallop” mixes a traditional text and color palette with a fun, modern twist. We love the elegance of Laura’s simple, traditional text and layout. It’s the fun, imperfect scalloped border that adds personality to the design in such a fresh way.

Runner Ups (clockwise from top left): “Certified Chic” by j.bartyn design | “Triangle Flirtation” by SimpleTe Design | “Watercolor and Doilies” by Bethany Bowers | “Twine” by Palm Papers | “Notable” by Wondercloud Design

Church Bells Award for the best church/chapel wedding invitation:

Blessed Lace” by Yolanda Mariak Chendak

Yolanda’s “Blessed Lace” is both sophisticated and modern. The beautiful, stylized cross has the delicacy of white lace, while the shape and detailing also recall a stained glass window. The simple, but unusual border adds to the charm of the design and the slightly textured background provides visual interest and depth.

Runner Ups (from left): “Going to the Chapel” by Stacey Meacham | “Grand Lace” by Carrie O’Neal

Vegas Baby! Award for the best Las Vegas wedding invitation:

Lucky in Love” by Susan Asbill

Susan captures the retro glamor of Las Vegas, the sense of billboards and flashing lights, and the energy of the city all while managing to keep “Lucky in Love” organized and elegant. The white text on a textured grey background allows us to focus on the playful blend of fonts and type treatments and her lively dotted lines lead your eyes around the design.

Runner Ups (clockwise from top left): “Bet on Love” by Rose Lindo | “Vegas or Bust” by The Occasional Hello | “Bright Light City” by root beer float | “Roll of the Dice” by Kelly Nasuta | “Vivas las Marriage” by Candice Leigh | “Hearts & Spades” by Jill Means

Flora and Fauna Award for the best outdoors or nature-inspired wedding invitation:

In the Park” by Amanda Larsen Design

“In the Park” is a perfect example of rustic chic. We love the richness and depth of the woodgrain background. Its deep brown really allows the text and flora embellishments to pop. The simple, concise wording keeps this design friendly and somewhat informal—the perfect invitation for outdoor nuptials.

Runner Ups (clockwise from top left): “Autumn Leaves” by Hello Hailey | “The Grove” by Design Lotus | “Ladybug Garden” by Alethea and Ruth | “Big Sur” by annie clark | “Sunday Succulent” by Carolyn MacLaren | “Forevergreen” by jenincmyk | “Evergreen” by The Social Type

Beachy Keen Award for the best beach wedding invitation:

Sea Shells by the Sea Shore” by Aspacia Henspetter

We love Aspacia’s “Sea Shells by the Sea Shore” for a chic beach wedding. The detail of her illustrations makes the design both impressive and delicate. Her use of starfish, coral, sea shells, and plants is so fun, while the informal confines of a perfect wreath shape keep the design clean.

Runner Ups (clockwise from top left): “Horizon” by Linda & Harriett | “The Shore” by Kristen Smith | “Beach Bums” by trbdesign | “Ombre Stripes” by Jill Means | “What a Pair” by Smudge Design

Best Newbie Design:

Leaf Specimen” by Krista Messer

Krista has entered the Minted world with a bang! “Leaf Specimen” was not only the highest rated newbie design, but it also came in at 7th place overall. Her illustrations and hand-lettering add a beautiful, personal touch to this invitation while the deep, muted tones and leafy elements are both sophisticated and naturally casual.

Runner Ups (from left): “Cake Toppers” by Zory Mory | “Fiesta Folk Art” by root beer float | “heart Throb” by Taylor Todd – Olive and Violet | “Star Dust” by Heather W.

Found in Translation Award for the best multi-language wedding invitation:

Language of Love” by VOSS

Sara’s stylized speech bubble sends a wonderful message of love, regardless of the languages on the invitation. We love the suggestion that each side of the invitation, one in English and the other in Spanish, translates to the same message. The framing and symmetrical layout give this design a sense of structure that complements the whimsy of the speech bubble.

Customer’s Choice Award:

Kissing Ball” by Phoebe Wong-Oliveros

Phoebe gives the old tradition of a kissing ball a very modern, fresh twist. Her text treatment and placement allows us to focus on the beauty and intricacy of the kissing ball itself. The density of the kissing ball is balanced by the delicacy of the white outline around each flower and the clean space of the overall design. It’s no surprise that this beautiful design is our Minted customer favorite.

Most Helpful Commenter Award:

Commenting and critique are a key part of the Minted experience and we’re proud that our community members help each other grow as designers. Because our Minties were so active in commenting in this challenge, we want to acknowledge our most helpful commenter. Congratulations Debb W! Head Over Heels | Wedding Collection Winners

The Head Over Heels challenge was our biggest wedding challenge of the year. There were a ton of amazing entries this time around and for good reason. Designers had the chance not only to win individual prizes, but also to launch their very own wedding collections on Minted. The first of the wedding collections was awarded to the designer with the most designs in the top 20, as voted by the Community. Two more wedding collection winners were selected by Minted’s editorial team based on performance in the Head Over Heels challenge as well as past design challenges.

The first collection award went to the very deserving Jennifer Wick. Of the eight Jennifer Wick designs selected to be sold on Minted, three made it into the top 20, coming in at second, sixth and thirteenth! To land this many designs in the top 20, out of 1,639 submissions, was quite the feat. Jen’s gorgeous florals and clever type treatments are the perfect addition to our wedding assortment and we’re so happy the voters agreed. Congratulations Jen!

We’re thrilled to announce that Rachel Simonsen of Alethea and Ruth is one of the two Minted editor’s picks for a collection win. We were in awe of Rachel’s modern yet elegant designs in this challenge and have been big fans of her work since “Banner and Branches” won first place in our Happily Ever After wedding challenge last year. We very much look forward to launching these fantastic designs for sale on Minted. Congratulations Rachel!

Kristen Smith was also chosen by Minted editors to receive the prize of launching her own wedding collection. Kristen is a powerhouse graphic designer, having been voted into the top 20 in the last eight design challenges. Her beautiful pattern work and clean typography style has really resonated with consumers and designers alike. Congratulations Kristen!

Head Over Heels 11-20th Place Winners!

For many couples all over the world, it’s not just the holiday season, it’s engagement season. While romantic proposals are being planned for Christmas and New Years, Minted is gearing up for an incredible 2012 wedding season.

Having worked in the wedding industry for a while now, I can honestly say I have never seen a more stunning collection of wedding designs as the winners in the Head Over Heels challenge. Five years ago, it was quite rare to have couples ask for modern or playful designs.  Now, couples are moving away from traditional invites towards unique designs that fit their unique personalities. The members of the Minted Design Community clearly recognize this. Everyone here at Minted was blown away by the diversity in the 1,639 submissions we received in the Head Over Heels Wedding Invitation Challenge. I feel honored to present you with the first half of our top 20, as voted by the Community. Congratulations, Minties! These designs can already be purchased by sending a special request to service [at] minted.com.

11th Place: “Modern Label” by Kristen Smith

There are so many sweet accents in Kristen’s “Modern Label” that add to the perfectly balanced composition of the design. From the dots and stripes to the pattern background and modern type treatment, we’re in love with every detail.

Real Weddings: Rania and Jeff’s Modern Indianapolis Wedding

Hello readers and fellow Minties! I am quite excited to share this real wedding with all of you, especially for my first ever Minted blog post. Wedding season is starting up again so I thought I’d give all of you brides and grooms, planning for the big day, a little bit of eye candy.  Last summer, I had the great pleasure of working with a very sweet, and oh so classy bride, Rania Abbasi and her amazing mother Deina, on all of Rania’s wedding paper needs.

Rania, positively glowing, on the day of her wedding

Rania chose Cocktail Hour by Ariel Rutland for her invites, one of my favorite Minted wedding invitations. We used the design not just for invitations but for day of wedding accessories as well. This square invite is one of our most modern wedding invitation suites.  In catching back up with Rania, I learned this is just what she was going for.

Rania and Jeff's lovely lovely invites
