I’m not going to be starring in a cake-decorating reality show anytime soon, but I can take a plain, frosted cake and make it ready for a party in just a few minutes—no fancy frosting tips required! Here are four easy ideas to try the next time you have an occasion that calls for something sweet.
Idea #1: Lollipops
Dum Dum suckers can easily be poked into the cake and then easily removed before serving. I love the variety of colors they come in and the finished look.

Idea #2: Licorice
Licorice comes in all sorts of visually appealing colors and shapes. It’s easy to create a modern, geometric candy collage by placing pieces on top of the frosting. Then, you can easily ditch ‘em before serving if you’re not a fan of the licorice taste.
Idea #3: Mini Mint Nonpareils
These mini mint nonpareils are super tasty and come in pastel shades of pink, yellow, and green—perfect for an Easter cake.
Idea #4: Citrus Slices
Orange slices are a quick cake-topper idea and would nicely complement a citrus- or dark chocolate-flavored cake. I love the bright orange-pink color of Cara Cara oranges; lemon and lime slices would work well, too.
