A quick swash of washi tape can take ho-hum pencils to wow. I love working in pencil, especially in my planning calendar. Pretty pencils are hard to find, but with this tutorial, you can make a variety of pencils to match your style, just grab some fun washi tape.
washi tape – available in Minted’s Party General Store
Step 1: Trim a straight edge for the end of the tape and cut a length of tape a little longer than the pencil.
Step 2: Starting towards the eraser end of the pencil, stick on the piece of tape aligning the straight edge with the metal part of the pencil. Smooth down the length of the pencil.
Step 3: Repeat steps 1 & 2 with a second piece of tape, lining up the patterns as best you can.
Step 4: Once the pencil is covered, carefully tear the end of the tape on the sharpened end of the pencil. Tear so the length is just past the painted portion of the pencil. Easier than decoupage and cuter than the ones you can find at the store. There is no need to order custom pencils for your next party, just add a piece of washi tape. Need to sharpen a decorated pencil? Peel back the end of the tape, sharpen your pencil, stick the tape back down and tear to shorten.
