When you are part of an online community, you spend a lot of time getting to know people through email, forums, online chat, and the phone. Nothing replaces actual face-to-face interaction though and whenever possible, we love getting together with designers for a cup of coffee, a cocktail, or lunch.
(Quick shout out: if you are ever in SF, drop us an email! We’d love to meet up).
Last week, we had a super-sized Minted Meet Up by inviting three designers from different parts of the U.S. to join us in San Francisco for a few days. The lucky designers — or should I say, the designers we were lucky to be able to hang out with — were Brandy of Marabou Design (Seattle, WA), Sydney Newsom (Dothan, AL), and Amy of Design Lotus (Baltimore, MD).
This was our first time ever inviting designers to come to SF and needless to say, we were really excited. In previous meet-ups, we have had the chance to get to know Brandy and Amy, but it was our first time meeting Sydney, and it was all three designers’ first time meeting each other and many of us who work at Minted.
We hosted them in an elegant apartment in Noe Valley and had several great San Francisco meals together, including breakfast at Bocadillos and dinner at Bar Bambino.
Over the course of three days, the three designers met with Minted to discuss their feedback — we talked about what works, what needs a lot of improvement, and what our hopes are for the future. We have books’ worth of notes that we are organizing and digesting from their visit, but there are a couple items that we have already begun working on, directly in response to what we heard needed to get done. To show our commitment to you in taking immediate action on the suggestions of the designers, we have developed this fonts list, for example, which lists every font in our catalog alongside sample text to make it easier for designers to figure out suitable font replacements.
It wasn’t all work and no play. On the last full day the designers were in town, we scheduled a video shoot to capture the designers and Mariam on camera talking about design, family, careers. We can’t wait to share the videos with you.
The morning started with hair by Nicole Brown of Mr. Pinkwhistle Salon and makeup by Deb Dapolito. Wish we could have someone make us look this gorgeous every morning!
Brandy amazed us with her knowledge of cosmetics and her ability to apply Japanese false eyelashes (she is applying them on Amy, above). A few hours later, everyone was dressed, fed coffee and croissants and feeling camera-ready.
We then headed to 3 Fish Studios, a gorgeous printmaking shop/photo studio/gallery that is the lovechild of the husband and wife team Eric Rewitzer and Annie Galvin. Art of all shapes, sizes, and mediums filled the studio, and the designers made themselves at home exploring and finding all sorts of things to admire.
In the meantime, our talented videography and lighting team set up the cameras and lights…
…and soon enough, it was go-time.
The designers left the studios each with a print they picked off the wall from 3 Fish Studios, as our thank you to them for taking time away from their families and busy careers to spend time with us. They gave us incredibly valuable and honest feedback, and we have our work cut out for us. Thank you Sydney, Brandy, and Amy!
Please stay tuned as we work on the issues and address requests sent to us by designers. If anything comes to mind right now, please send us an email at designers [at] minted [dot] com.
