This design works well with a black and white photo, but it also looks good in color. I think the backer would be fairly simple and resemble the stripes on the front

I like the stripes a lot...perhaps another font choice for "happy holidays" would give a modern feel that the stripes are calling for. just a thought :)

How about a slab serif instead of this script? or another script that is less flourished?

I agree with the other comments - I think the script is taking away from the modern feel of the stripes. I'm wondering if it would look cool if, instead of the white box at the bottom, you extended the photo/stripes right to the bottom edge (so they bleed off all four sides of the design), and then used two of the lower stripes for your type (ie put the type on an angle following the path of a stripe). Maybe in white? Just a thought :)
