comments from Lizelly:

An updated version of traditional Mexican Papel Picado motifs frames this newlywed's first holiday greeting card, but is perfect for a family portrait as well.

The border is beautiful but I think it is a little overwhelming. Have you tried a transparent white or ivory?

Thanks for the input, ladies. Although I did not think about a lighter color overlay for the design, I do have another option with the bg in white and the cut-outs in red (no see-through). But, as Becky states this is very MEXICO, the flourishes, the cut-outs, so I went with this option instead...BOLD!
